So what's the goal here? Continued mocking? How long does that last? It's very clear that no one is interested in actually understanding anything I had to say. I get it. It's extremely hard to step out of your comfort zone. It's so much easier to just make jokes. Hey, I even like jokes. I stand by my initial statement- saying "her pea-brain" is NOT a critique of Katy Perry's music-but a judgement on her as a person, and a common way that people participate in sexism is by reducing a woman to a negative stereotype-stupid, greedy, whore, slut, sensitive, too driven. A critique about a person's music is not the issue here, and it never was. Yes, I did say music snobbery is fucking tired, and it is. My problem, is with the reduction of a successful female to 'stupid' and then the follow up-of saying she was so stupid because of her failed marriage. Because that is just so hilarious, right? Ha. Ha. Arkay. Lots of lively discussions here with many interesting points made. I love Barbara's thought about creative people on the sinking boat and how we all have to hang together until we reach the dock. That about sums it up for me! Catherine mentioned how we often have to hide our love for Joni's music and that really struck home for me the other day when an old friend just blurted out that, sorry, he never liked or "got" Joni's music - but he did "like her boyfriends' music." Hahaha! It is true - I have maybe 2-3 friends outside the group here who appreciate and love her like we do and am always hesitant to bring her up with anyone else. I think there were some periods of time here long ago where the atmosphere of musical discussion could be a bit rarified and snobby. But then others, including Bob, came along and made it O.K. to talk about other diverse artists and music and that really helped open up the discussion to checking out new artists and music and revisiting music that may have been previously ignored or dismissed. I recall Bob and some of us proudly taking up the label of "music slut" at some point. And this all led to us now being not embarrassed to sing Monkees songs alongside Joni's most complex and intricate works at Jonifests. .I may always be hesitant to talk Joni on the "outside" but can feel happily free to say I still love the music of Pablo Cruise here and at least someone may agree and cite their fave songs of his. It is all good.;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Nov 2013 01:58:16 -0400 From: Sally Subject: Re: Sexist pig? Njc Hey Arkay! :) Listen, I ask you to consider that when Bob made his initial comments he did jot say not did he imply that Katy Perry was a pea brain because she was female. He did not say that women are pea brained. I respect your feelings and you are certainly entitled to them but you seem terribly upset by something that doesn't seem to have actually been said. I don't think the comment was meant to disparage Katy Perry because she is female. Bob seemed to have been in disagreement with her comments about Joni. And further, he's obviously not a minsogynst. He's a freak for Joni, who as we know might be one of the hippest women on the planet. It just doesn't follow. Hi Jim! :D Whatcha got on the turntable tonight while you're not sleeping? I've got Joe Firstman! Anybody know him? He's amazing!
