I don't recall ever hearing him singing anything but his own material. It's just that sometimes my brain will have me "hear" things in someone else's voice. Doesn't happen that often but, to me, the song sounds a bit like early Gordo. I'm sure at the time, they encountered each other at the clubs they played at. I agree with you about genderless singing. I don't mind it when a man sings a "woman's" song or vice versa. I like to challenge my brain sometimes. Goodness knows, my brain needs that! In fact, more often I love it when someone sings a song that's "meant" for the opposite sex. >________________________________ > From: Susan E. If she wrote it for Gordon Lightfoot to sing, I doubt he would have picked it up since he had no trouble writing his own songs to sing. I really love Winter Lady and sang it at Pazfest ... I think it's fine for a woman to sing it to a woman if they so choose ... :-) another example of Joni's genderless songwriting style. Even when I think what she says has some merit, there are times I wish she'd exercise a bit of tact. Calling Leonard Cohen a "boudoir poet" (maybe he is - who am I to say?) kind of sets my teeth on edge. Just putting that out there. I know many of us also admire her (sometimes) plain talking, but there's duality for ya! For some reason I often hear her "Winter Lady" song sung in Gordon Lightfoot's voice and, no, I'm not confusing it with his "Song for a winter's night." I'd like to do my finest impression of Gord singing it, but I'm afraid it wouldn't sound like him nearly as much as I hope it would. Perhaps if there's another Joni fest that I can make it to. >________________________________ > From: "TheStaff@JoniMitchell.com" >To: joni@smoe.org >Sent: Tuesday, October 22, 2013 1:24:21 PM >Subject: New Library item: The Resonance Of Joni Mitchellbs "Wizard of Is" With Leonard Cohenbs "Suzanne" > > >Title: The Resonance Of Joni Mitchellbs "Wizard of Is" With Leonard Cohenbs "Suzanne" >Publication: 1heckofaguy.com/ >Date: 2013.10.21 > >http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2704 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Oct 2013 10:45:31 +1000 From: "Pat Boland" Subject: Sweet Sue on the Midway Hi guys, I was playing the Moon In The Mirror clip... again, and at the end some suggestions pop up of course, and among them was this excellent video of Sue's which I haven't listened to in quite a while.
