It's all of that, for me. There are more religious extremists in the US than most Americans will admit. As far as I'm concerned, a religious person doesn't have to threaten violence to be a religious extremist. If they are going to say that homosexuals are "wrong" and are "going to hell," they are, as far as I'm concerned, religious extremists. As for the "America, right or wrong" bit, I am so fed up with the notion that the US -- or any country -- has to be "the best!" Why? Why does any one place have to be the best? Is it a contest? Or do Americans (or others who believe this same sort of bullshit) have such an inferiority complex that they must constantly be trumpeting this belief? It really pisses off a lot of my American friends when I question the notion that the US is "the best." It makes them angry and uncomfortable. I don't believe there is only one "best." What is best is what is best for each person. The US is not the best for me. I don't see, at least anymore, that it offers a whole lot that is significantly different than certain other places offer. In fact, in some ways it offers less. Get over "best" already. It's so unflattering.
