i will go with b), "she was already getting kind of known as Mitchell".  She was building an empire, one poker chip at a time. The boyfriends were a different kind of poker chip, useful as foils for exploring new musical textures or laughing it all away. As a kid, she was the ringmaster, the taskmaster, the manager who assigned roles to the other kids. 

She is often described as vulnerable but that is not the same as warm, kind, and thoughtful.
