Give me a little bit and I will come up with a top 20. As for overall music, 2012 was another amazing year. So many of my all-time favorite artists put out solid records, some great new artists, and some great follow-ups. I can unabashedly say that Grizzly Bear's "Shields" was my #1 record. And I was really afraid of it because the last record they made ("Veckatimist") was my favorite for THAT year. These guys write beautiful songs that stick in your ears forever. The artists I discovered in 2012: Alabama Shakes (new artist of the year for me) Howlin Rain Andrew Bird (had heard of him but never heard his work until this one) Yukon Blonde Best Coast That Tallest Man On Earth Field Report - Thanks Craig for pointing out this incredible record. I shared it with my son, who shared it with all of his buds. Balmorhea - gorgeous instrumental music Philip Phillips - An American Idol on my list? WTF? But this is fun and listenable and I think he's a genuine talent Lianne La Havas - the new Meshell Old favorites - new gems: Bonnie Raitt Ani Difranco Kaki King Bruce Springsteen M. Ward Jay Farrar Jack White Dr. John - this was my favorite 2012 record for a long time Santana - incredible that this record got NO attention Chuck Prophet - and I got to see him live in town Ryan Shaw - I will never get tired of soul music Paul Weller Patti Smith Sun Kil Moon The Hives Fiona Apple Glen Hansard - he always makes me stop what I'm doing and pay attention Jukebox The Ghost Mission Of Burma - the most unlikely comeback of the year, along with... Soundgarden - I'm a sucker for Chris Cornell's voice DIIV Jimmy Cliff The Gaslight Anthem Visioneers - ear candy of the year Lee Ranaldo - Sonic Youth was always about Kim & Thurston, now not so much Bob Mould Dave Matthews - congrats for getting back together with Steve Lillywhite Patterson Hood - love him, with or without the DBT's ZZ Top - thought this would suck. I was wrong. Ben Folds Five - Back with the 5, it makes a difference. His strongest set in a while Dinosaur Jr. Mumford & Sons - beat the sophomore jinx, but they'll need to stretch a bit next time Green Day - it's one thing to put out THREE records in a year, another when they all kick it. Bettye Lavette Alicia Keys - perhaps her finest album Donald Fagen And now I'm reviewing all the other "best of" lists to find out what I missed!
