That thumping chord at the end of each verse, the raised tempo, which is lost on the CD version, though that doesn't detract from the recording. Like her it grabbed my heart because of the film's structure. It was about a stumbling autistic person and his struggle with the world in the first half, followed by 9/11 and its impact on the personal life he'd built up. Like Turbulent Indigo it moved me. This coupled with her journey into the backwoods and soul breakdown, mentioned in the same program, is very shamanistic. Kris Kristofferson advised her against giving so much of herself in her songs and being too open but this too is shamanistic as it is openness to all experience - the innocence that makes us receptive to all existence - the open wound that is our heart out there. I like Sex Kills a lot and always felt that Joni never really rocked it out enough to push the anger/energy where it needed to be. Lo and behold, back in 2005 the band Roine Stolt released an album titled (prophetically) "Wall Street Voodoo" - all originals excepting a cover of Joni's "Sex Kills". For me, they really brought this song where it needed to be. Check it out.
