The only thing I am not sure about, although in Joni's case you may be right - is "loved" being past tense. Is she referring to the time he told her and that being a past event or that love is in the past for them? Or did she think she meant the time he told her and have an unconscious slip of the tense ... hmmm. As many from long ago posts know Blue is my favorite- but I think FTR is a very close second - it is nearly perfect as well. And yes it is as fresh as ever and stands up well today. It's been a long time since I posted but I miss it and hope to visit more often. As for the songs, I think EVERYONE can relate to them if you've lived even a little. People's Parties - oozing with duality; a song about a crowded party and the loneliness and emptiness felt by the singer who is there. Friendly vs. cutting, laughing vs. crying, those in the center vs. those in the wings, and then transitions into a conversation with (presumably) the person she's with at the party describing what she sees as some of her shortcomings and her inability to enjoy a simple party in the same spirit as others. We've all been to a gathering where we felt like we don't fit for one reason or another I'm sure. Same Situation - Certainly a universal feeling in any relationship at some stage, wondering about the true nature of it, the sincerity of it, the staying power of it. "I asked myself when you said you loved me, do you think this can be real" - interesting that she chooses the past tense of 'love' as if she knows it's already in the past. This song is full of interesting word choices. The bit about her not believing in a deity but STILL sending up a prayer - send me somebody who's strong and SOMEWHAT sincere...the idea of compromise. The piece about wanting your partner to be truthful like the church demands truth, like a cop demands truth, like a mother demands the truth, but knowing that your truths will be turned against you is really a strong lyric. And I would imagine that the struggle for higher positions/achievements vs. search for love is something that woman struggle with more than men (careers vs. relationships). I have several friends who made decisions years ago to invest themselves in their careers as opposed to relationships and now they want the relationship and are struggling to find it. Anyway, these songs are both classic Joni - musically intriguing, lyrically original but dealing with universal themes. Like I said yesterday, these songs feel as fresh and as relevant today as they did in 1974.
