First time Bruce has been back since he was here in 2006 with the Seeger Sessions Band post Katrina. It may have been the greatest performance ever at a Jazz Fest (and I saw Joni there and have been around for 30 + years). I was reduced to tears at three different points of the show which started at 4:35 and ended at 7:20. There was never a moment I lost interest or drifted off which sometimes happens during long hot sessions. Clarence's nephew Jake did the big man proud and the band was stellar. I felt like I had been to church. The only thing was the sound was a bit off due to a few factors but all in all I was able to hear beyond it cause the content was so good. On the other hand Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers also had an amazing set and their sound man should give lessons to us all. WoW is all I can say. A studio sharp mix with separation and clarity and transparency on a live format that started a a living room type volume and ended in a rock show crescendo that was unparalleled to anything these ears have heard on that stage. Other great Jazz Fest moments for the first weekend. Tao Seeger and the PHJB at the Hall for a midnight set on Tuesday. The New Orleans Bingo show knocked one out the park at the Gentilly Stage. Gomez rocked us. Chuck Leavell with special guest Bonnie Bramlett (who only sang one song but she wailed) Beth Patterson and The Potent Bathers and her new Bouzouki Electric. All this and the great company of my god pal Meg Griffin from Sirius/XM (The Loft, Deep Tracks, Classic Vinyl) Mark Felsot who produces Tom Petty's radio program and formally of Rockline. We had an amazing dinner the 3 of us and told stories of great music and the makers of the same that was just plain better than hot steamy sex and the breakfast special. So many friends and faces in the crowd that is so familiar and my family after 30+ years of working it I just had a weekend of nothing but friendship, music, food, and very little sleep. G'Night! Oh take me Calgon and Gordons.
