Either you can sing in tune, or (like me) you can't hold a tune, and you should try other pursuits. The metronome has existed for a very long time, and it kept the tempo. However, if you could not sing, then you (hopefully) didn't. We've really got to get past the point of continuing to try to make something out of nothing.
