There is no doubt that she's a cute, talented girl, but at this stage she still seems like a lightweight compared to Joni. However, she's been at this professionally since about 16 or 17. She is very driven; if I'm not mistaken, her parents relocated to Nashville when Taylor was a young teen...Taylor was that determined to break into the music biz. I think she's also self- taught on guitar, albeit in standard tuning, and writes her own songs (many of which I actually like...just as I love a gourmet meal, but still enjoy kicking back with fast food). My theory is that Taylor is still evolving musically. Look at how Joni evolved, or even the Beatles! You know who I think would be able to play a marvelous Joni Mitchell is Cate Blanchett. I don't know if she can play guitar but if anyone saw "Benjamin Button" we know she sings beautifully and her acting ability is top of the line. She can look as young as the role demands, do any accent or mannerism and most importantly carry the unseen aspects of a person's character in her portrayal. Joni would, I imagine, deride the whole movie project, as she did with the book "Girls Like Us", refusing to be interviewed for it. If Taylor Swift is the actress to portray her, you know this will cement every feeling about the ersatz nature of Hollywood and the music biz she's ever expressed. Cate Blanchett, in my opinion, she would admire and respect- hell, she might even go see the movie and smoke outside till her bit came on! Dave (longest post in a while...) Always good to see a piece of your writing, Dave. I think I may have suggested at one time that Cate Blanchett could rise to the challenge of playing Joni in a movie. Anyone who could nail the great Katharine Hepburn as she did in 'The Aviator' could take on Joni Mitchell and give the performance credibility and depth. I'm not so sure that casting a young, mainstream singer is going to cause a new audience of 20-somethings to turn on to Joni's music, no matter how popular Taylor Swift may be. It might inspire some of those who bought Joni's records when her career started to revisit those recordings and maybe put a toe into her post 'Court and Spark' work. But, at the risk of sounding elitist or, heaven forbid, a snob, (or like Joni, perhaps) I think most of the Taylor Swift followers would scratch their heads and say 'huh?' if they listened to a Joni Mitchell album. There might be a surge in sales of 'Blue', but I just don't see Taylor Swift pulling a huge crowd of followers on to the Joni Mitchell bandwagon. And as far as Joni's work from 'The Hissing of Summer Lawns' and beyond is concerned, I don't imagine the people who would buy Taylor Swift's music would get into it all. I also agree that, although 'Both Sides Now' has suffered from overexposure, it is an amazing song coming from someone as young as Joni was when she wrote it. How many new recording artists have the writing skill to produce a debut like 'Song To a Seagull'? That is still one of my favorite records by anybody. To me, the genius was evident right from the start. So many musicians have recognized Joni's brilliance. My feeling is that Joni Mitchell is going to remain an open secret, truly loved by fellow musicians and her core fan-base that really appreciate her work while the rest of the music industry pays lip-service to the 'legendary folk-singer'.
