The coincidence of course is that Mingus was 56 when he died. I couldn't find any official verification of it but certainly many references to it as if it was fact. There was an instance 2 years ago when there was a beaching of 56 whales in New Zealand, that was pretty coincidental too I thought. I hope so. The idea of 56 beached whales as some kind of weird synchronous event seems rather sad. Reading Don's firsthand account of the first meetings with Mingus and the real circumstances behind those lyrics to 'Goodbye Porkpie Hat' was thrilling to me. I don't remember Joni ever giving so much detail about her first meeting with Charles Mingus. Joni refers to the 56 whales in the liner notes for 'Mingus', if I remember correctly (getting up now to go look). Back again after squinting at the cd booklet. Here's what Joni had to say about the whales: 'Charles Mingus, a musical mystic, died in Mexico, January 5, 1979, at the age of 56. He was cremated the next day. That same day 56 sperm whales beached themselves on the Mexican coastline and were removed by fire. These are the coincidences that thrill my imagination.' I loved the conversational tone of the writing. I might have to read that book.
