Sometimes his influences are too transparent to me (Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Warren Zevon) and I'd rather hear the original. But he's obviously talented and a showman. I can't remember if I bought a copy or got it as a gift but somehow I have his CD We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions and I really like that. It feels like a band hanging out and having a blast. When an artist can hit ONE of these things they're doing a good job. Those that hit them all are the classics. Pop artists shoot for the first two. Other songwriters that use boring chord progressions - Chuck Berry, Hank Williams, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan. And all to good effect. FWIW, I wouldn't include Warren Zevon on a list of Springsteen influences. By the time his REAL first record came out (1976) Bruce had three releases of his own, including Born To Run. They did collaborate on at least one song, Jeannie Needs A Shooter. Woody Guthrie is someone who Bruce has said was an influence, especially on this album.
