They don't all it acting for nothing. Taylor is young and could surprise us all. I remember when they announced that Tom Cruise was cast as Lestat in "Interview with the Vampire" and my stomach turned. But he was superb and proved us all all wrong. Brad Pitt was also excellent in that film. Happy Gras ya'll! While I was by and large underwhelmed by the quality of those comments, I did empathize with the source of the visceral, emotional sources of them. The comment that swayed me, however, was near the end. It reminded me that Taylor Swift will draw young people to see the film. That kind of exposure could not be accomplished by casting a no-name or any-old younger actress. At this point in her career (viz, retirement), increased exposure can only help Joni's legacy, and Swift's casting can only increase that exposure. The other night, I watched a recently released VH1 special on the 100 Greatest Women in Music (over the last 20 years). For those interested, Madonna topped the list. Lady Gaga was in the top 5. Annie Lennox made the list. As did Cher. As did Taylor Swift. There were some shout-outs to earlier legends in various genres, who did not make the list. They couldn't accommodate everyone who might have been deserving. But they couldn't leave out Joni, either, so she got a nod as a folk-rock "legend" (or some such), along with Ani DiFranco and Tracy Chapman. Joni's cohort group of artists and musicians "knows", but most of the world (still) does not. I for one will be happy if Taylor Swift does the part. And I hope she does an appealing job of it - even if it does not fully capture Joni's essence. Moreover, I hope that in her promotional appearances for the film, Swift will describe her experience in researching (discovering?) Joni and her reaction to that research/discovery. Some young people might actually go out and buy Blue (and then you know there may be more). I found it interesting that at her concert in Houston last Nov. she had "It's love's illuisions that I recall, I really don't know love at all" written on her arm with a sharpie. And at her late August LA concert right after we departed our Joni's Jazz venture, she had, "But my heart cried out for you, California" written on her arm. Christina, let me know when you have a "New Orleans" schedule made up. I'm over there from time to time (200 mile drive) and I would love to run into you and hopefully hear you play and sing. And am booked for the 1st weekend in May (JazzFest). I know there are a few other list members considering JazzFest also. Will you be there? I just fb'd you.
