Here is short clip of a doctor saying just that: http://www.ehow.com/video_4784675_smoking-cause-leukemia_.html My mother smoked until the day she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and there is a 70% risk of pancreatic cancer in smokers. Did Steve Jobs smoke? Yes, tobacco is considered to be a poison and works as a pesticide. Any environmentalist who smokes is polluting their internal environment. Although tobacco is in the same family as nightshade, it is also in the same family as tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant. Nicotine can keep up the levels of both dopamine (feel good neurotransmitter) and norepinephrine (stimulant). There is evidence it is has both good and bad effects in the gastrointestinal tract, that it can be used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults. Nicotine also binds to the neuromuscular junctions of skeletal muscles, and the polio virus specifically damages the neurons that provide the axonal component of these junctions. So it might not be just the focussing benefits of nicotine that appeals to Joni on the subconscious level. Although nicotine itself is a certified carcinogen, many other harmful particles are breathed in as cigarette smoke, including radioactivity like Polonium 210 that is like throwing a bowling ball through a wall in the way it damages cell walls, so smoking can be considered to be a dirty way of administering nicotine. It is like breathing concentrated air pollution or pesticide. Not all carcinogens stink like air pollution can. For example, benzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that can travel through the air and smells wonderful! I got in trouble in organic chemistry lab for leaving it out on the table like air freshner because it smelled so good. I too like the way a freshly lighted cigarette smells. Maybe it is the benzene known to be present in the smoke that is so pleasing to smell. Benzene inhalation is linked to leukemia and other blood cancers by the way. I prefer cigar and pipe tobacco to cigarettes. They are much stronger. However, I try not to smoke these because of the risk of oral, laryngeal, and esophageal cancer. Love, Laura ________________________________ From: Rob And Tracy To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Sunday, February 19, 2012 1:21 AM Subject: Joni's magical grounding herb Ok, I've skipped many posts the past few days because I was in Saskatoon and couldn't read everything on my phone, so forgive me if I am merely repeating. However, I have to say this: even though some supposedly "healthy" people die young, and some people with bad habits live freakishly long, it is irresponsible to just say "oh, we can't control destiny" or whatever. My mother was a life-long smoker, and when she died 3 1/2 years ago at 73 from leukemia, my amazement was that I couldn't believe that it wasn't the smoking that killed her. My beloved Stevie Nicks' mother Barbara died this Xmas after 70 years of smoking, although from smoking related illnesses. But I have to say this: to say that tobacco is a "grounding herb" is pure self-deceiving bullshit. That statement has always made my blood boil. It's not a grounding herb. It's poison. As an ex-smoker, I know how addictive tobacco is. This July will mark my 9 year anniversary of quitting, and I STILL dream of smoking ! at least once a month. And I still love the smell of a fresh lit cigarette. And I still like to stand outside with the smokers to steal a whiff. But even when I was a smoker, and believe me, I wanted to smoke from sun up to sundown, without a break, I knew it was poison. And I am sorry, but even if the frigging Pope said "smoke on, my child, for this is a catechism herb", well, even I would know enough to call bullshit to that. I just wish Joni would say "sorry, I am too hooked to quit", rather than involving medicine men. Smoke all you want. That goes for everyone. Just don't pretend it's some special cosmic tool for you. As someone who loses and gains the same damn 50 lbs each year, I would never say "Carbs and trans-fats are my grounding energy". No, instead I know what my weaknesses are and each year I hope it's the last time I gotta drag out my "fat clothes". Same thing with smoking. It's all the same - we take comfort where we can. I just wish Joni could use some ! of that eagle's clarity to call a spade a spade. Lecture over.
