It presented many challenges similar to those I had with Song to a Seagull. I think Joni was not established enough to be granted much studio time even for her second album and it shows in the general amateurish recording quality of the first two records. The opening track Tin Angel, produced by The Doors and Janis Joplin's producer Paul Rothchild was especially bad, with an absolutely dreadful guitar punch-in at 1:19; the subsequent tracks were engineered/co-produced by Henry Lewy and sound better although still with pretty bad tape hiss and that cold gothic mono reverb on the vocal that characterized the first album. Chris Coccaro (cKarma) recently told me he used to find the album unlistenable but persevered because the songs within were good. I hope I have greatly reduced the unlistenability factor!! I dedicate this effort to Anita G who I know loves this album, and who performed a fine rendition of I Think I Understand at her Conker Cabin soirie in 2010. For me the standout track is The Fiddle and the Drum, which is a brilliant vocal performance and a lyric that is as true today as it was during Vietnam. I will close this link in two weeks, so grab it soon if you want it... http://db.tt/0TIqB1eQ happy listen, Dave ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2012 #274 ***************************** ------- To post messages to the list, send tojoni@smoe.org.
