Right now, she is so out of the cultural radar that she's barely mentioned in print. Which is probably how she wants it. She'd rather live the full course of this life than to be another "victim" of the star maker machine. Her period of allowing herself to be put on a pedestal was short-lived, fortunately. She had the wisdom to realize that her life was more valuable than how many records she sold. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni-digest@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni-digest@smoe.org] Sent: Wednesday, February 15, 2012 5:41 AM To: joni-digest@smoe.org Subject: JMDL Digest V2012 #198 JMDL Digest Wednesday, February 15 2012 Volume 2012 : Number 198 ========== TOPICS and authors in this Digest: - -------- Re: death sells music NJC [Bob.Muller@Fluor.com] - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 15 Feb 2012 08:36:23 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: death sells music NJC Well, morbid or not it's a verifiable fact. The first time I realized it was when Elvis died and all the record stores sold out of his records. Since then (and before too, I'm sure), there is an endless stream of examples, most recently Whitney Houston and Etta James. Amy Winehouse's record company released a posthumous album after her death to capitalize on it ( and it's a good record too). I-tunes, Amazon, and other music outlets promote death-music because they know the sales are going to spike. And obviously the phenomenon is not limited to the music business. Death sells merchandise for everyone from Princess Diana to Dale Earnhardt and all points in between. The interesting question is why this phenomenon occurs. Is it a reflection of our realization of our own immortality, as if possessing celebrity memorabilia after their demise will help them to live on? I would say that's most of it. Possibly people experience guilt that they didn't support someone ENOUGH and want to make up for lost time? In the show "Hoarders" (a fascinating show), most of the folks that start hoarding stuff, even worthless stuff, begin doing so when they experience some kind of loss, a spouse, a parent, a child. Their sense of loss of having something so dear to them taken away spurs them to become unable to give ANYTHING up, even trash, animal waste, etc. Is this an international thing or just a USA thing? So I guess when I die there's going to be a mad rush to get Joni covers CD's...well, don't wait for that, I've got a long way to go hopefully. Enjoy them now. Volume #140 coming up soon.
