News reports said that Jennifer Hudson was grief stricken at the Grammys ... she is definitely a soul daughter of Whitney. If a statistician looked at the quality of Star Spangled Banner performances over the past 40 years (Rosanne Barr taken out as an outlier) Whitney Houston's effortlessly perfect performance in this clip had to be in the top 1 percent. So sad ... addiction sucks. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Michael Paz Sent: Tuesday, February 14, 2012 11:00 AM To: kbhla Cc: Stewart.Simon@sunlife.com; joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: WHitney Houston (njc) way to stnad your ground! I know her pop and high gloss may not be to everyone's tastes but, to me, her voice could transcend any song into something strikingly beautiful. Big loyal fan, too. Last night I got into a little debate with a friend. He was raving on about Adele and saying that she has pure soul and that Whitney was just a "trained singer" (!) and never had soul. I said to him, "yes, that is true, Whitney is not soul, she is HEART." He quickly agreed and backed off ;-) RIP Whitney - we will miss you. And your question is a good one - A crane is a sea bird, "Penance" (aka Penance Crane according to The Dancer) and most of Penance's lines start with "I was at sea I tell you". I don't know if it goes much deeper than that, but I do know that Joni does not choose words casually or with disregard. Of course, knowing Joni, she could have meant something by it. Thanks for the list. Some other ones: 2.
