Those Johnny/Joni tracks are great. Most are on YouTube, I first them on the "Unplugged & Jamming" bootlegs that came out a dozen or so years ago. Additionally, they are available officially on DVD. The way Johnny talks to her and about her, you can tell that he has a real crush, and who can blame him? If you haven't heard "Long Black Veil", check it out. I can't help but hear THE WORDS because the accompanying sounds are so scant they serve only to support them and not as a distraction of any kind. Anyway, back this song...I'm just blown away by the title of it - I THINK I understand...as simple a phrase as it is, it's one you seldom hear. We say "I understand" a lot as well as "I think I KNOW", but this middle groud of "I think I understand" is fascinating to me, and of course like so much of Joni, brutally honest. Can we REALLY know? Can we TRULY understand, or is the most honest thing to say exactly what Joni is saying here? Besides the beautiful melody (sounds like the same guitar tuning for Midway and a similar intro), the words are very affirming. There are some days for me that start with me taking a big deep breath and saying to myself "today I am not prey to dark uncertainty". As an aside, I'm amazed that this song has not been covered more than it has been. I have long considered I Think I Understand one of Joni's finest songs. Although I do not suffer from depression now, I probably did somewhat 40 years ago, when I first listened to this song, and it made me shake and weep. I was moved to the bone again in 2003 when Anita performed this song at Jonifest, and felt again in her performance that night the insights that first touched me - and no doubt touched her, too. It is a very, very powerful song. So, today I played Anita's performance, memorialized as part of my Jonifest DVD's from that year, on my Blueray, and recaptured that moment and feeling (I think I saw my head in the audience, standing and applauding at the end). It was a moving way to start this now bright day. It's actually in simple drop D - DADGAE. Her finger picking is really masterful, because she makes it sound simple. I, on the other hand, will have to practice for months and probably still fail ... fear is like a wilderland!!! The lyrics are a deep meditation on fear and courage ... the visuals are so crisp ... I love the beginning of the second verse: Now the way leads through the hills Above the steeples chime Below me sleepy rooftops round the harbor It's there I'll take my thirsty fill Of friendship over wine Forgetting fear but never Disregarding her ... It's so interesting you compare Clouds to TI, Bob. I never thought of that, but some of the very deep honesty of fear and courage can be seen in songs like Sunny Sunday, Last Chance Lost and Sire of Sorrow. Excellent point!!! :-) Susan Tierney McNamara email: sem8@cornell.edu - - - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Sent: Thursday, December 20, 2012 8:09 AM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: I Think I Understand Just heard this song, and as always it stopped me in my activities and FORCED me to hear it. I think much, if not all of Clouds does that for me. Perhaps it's the sparse production, and maybe that's the same reason that TI has the same effect. As popular as this album was and remains, and coupled with the fact that the VAST majority of artists choose songs from 1968-1972 to do, it gets overlooked, I guess because there is such wealth to pick from. Hope all of my Joni friends have a great day today - if you have shadows to face, may you rob their blackness blind and have a bold taste of sunlight instead. She even has her longer version hair in little knots at the tops of her ears like I've seen Joni back in the day. And I think Gwyneth has that sort of plain and lovely face that Joni has without makeup. I'd recommend it, although I do cringe every time she goes near an oven Daniel Craig as her husband, poet Ted Hughes. Before Craig was such big stuff. I think Gwyneth has the chops to give the Joni bio some depth. Do you have a drop on the casting director ? I think Joni, if she would approve anything, which she wouldn't, certainly would not approve of Taylor Swift, who is trying so hard to climb the musical ladder of Tinsel Town. Taylor doesn't really need Joni's help. Someone with gravitas would be suitable. I vote for Gwyneth & I'm sorry I didn't think of her before. That song is so significant for me. As someone who has spent so much of their life trying to combat fear, (Death), I find the wonderful thing about the process of singing this extraordinary song lies, for me, toward the end where, having travelled through the song, we reach the lines: "Where forests rise to block the light that keeps a traveller sane. I'll challenge them with flashes from a brighter time" When I sing it to others, I look around and see the faces of good people. In that moment, I don't feel so alone. The dark forest is challenged. I am suddenly present in a brighter time. But I do think GP is a wonderful performer. My thoughts turn to Shakespeare in Love, for which she was deservedly lauded. She's got lots of career and life experience to draw on. I dread this movie, but a serious actress might be able to give it the weight it deserves. Good thoughts, Lindsay!
