Because I composed it about 4 times and none seemed astute or intelligent enough for this list. But instead of the back button I hit send, so there it is. lol, sorry Em the less than clever ________________________________ From: Em To: Dave Blackburn ; Catherine McKay Cc: Marianne Rizzo ; joni list Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 1:30 PM Subject: Re: album song order, njc I've wondered about that. I still read the charts on the last page or so of Rolling Stone, and I actually wondered about whether or not, with the vast number of songs and artists floating around, the kids/young 'uns know and obsess over the identities of performers of the tunes they like. Whereas in the dinosaur days we had so relatively few choices that every album and song was to be studied and learned in the liner notes - you knew who wrote it, maybe who played keyboards, maybe the producer etc. Although I guess the identity of "producers" is a huge thing now. Now, some of the songs are actually by the producer? like that Skrillex dude, and there's another one I can't remember his name now. But the names are all over the place in RS, as the artist. But really they are the mixer ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2012 10:04:03 -0800 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: Re: album song order, njc When you are making records the song order sure seems important, as you often have this grand scheme of a narrative arc, or getting tempos and keys meshing just right; but in the end I think most of us only have time to listen to a track or two before we are distracted by something. As for the young 'uns I'm not sure they have ever listened to an album from start to finish. My students don't even bother to find out the name of the artist who does the song they like, and them getting the whole album is never even considered. Notice I say gettingbuying would also be highly irregular. It's funny to ask them "who's your favorite singer/guitarist/songwriter?" They have never even thought about it, but to save face usually say something like "oh, I like everything." However, for at least first listen on any brand new album and for certain classics (including "Hejira" and for Jonatha Brooke's "The works"), I find I need to listen to the whole thing in the order in which it was produced. From what I hear, the young'uns today (kids these days!) don't do albums the way we old folks did. I think they're missing something, but what do I know? > > > > >> ________________________________ >> From: Marianne Rizzo >> To: joni list >> Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 8:41:46 AM >> Subject: album song order, njc >> >> album song order. . >> they were mentioning this on npr radio (my favorite ) yesterday >> >> so I thought we might want to talk about it. >> >> Does newer technology make album song order a drizzling thing of the past? >> >> What are your experiences with Album song order? >> >> xx >> Marianne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2012 07:58:36 -0500 From: kenevans kenevans Subject: Re: One word Just ice On Dec 11, 2012, at 7:43 AM, Catherine McKay wrote: ------------------------------ *From:* Mark *To:* kenevans kenevans ; joni@smoe.org *Sent:* Tuesday, December 11, 2012 12:54:07 AM *Subject:* Re: One word - -----Original Message----- From: kenevans kenevans Sent: Monday, December 10, 2012 9:07 PM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: One word Notches Nachos?
