At work, with my Ipod, about once a week I choose a letter and let the songs beginning with that letter play for the day. I get a chance to hear tracks that I maybe haven't heard in a while. I almost never play shuffle. A couple Pink Floyds, maybe a Todd or Stevie here or there but for the most part I don't lose anything by throwing the albums in a big bubbling pot, stirring it up and seeing what comes out. Back in the 70's I bought a Sharp tape player that would actually play the tape tracks in random order - kind of sucked because it would take time jumping from tape gap to tape gap, and sometimes it would mistake a moment of silence for break between songs, but it was a start. And like lots of you, I would also make tapes of a mix of songs, not just always tapes of complete albums though I did that too, and more frequently. When CD's came into being, it was cause to rejoice for me, because I could load my 6-disc changer, click shuffle, and let 'er rip. I lusted for the Sony 100-CD changer but never took the plunge. Now I have hard drives and the cloud filled with tens of thousands of songs, and just say "go" and "surprise me". It's the way I listen to music - call me trained by the radio or whatever.
