Since I enjoy always having music around me, the portability factor has always been important. Back in the days of vinyl, I'd buy records and cases of blank Maxell tapes so that I could tape the albums and play them in the car or any location that had a tape deck or somewhere I could take my jambox. When CD's came out, their portability made LP's obsolete overnight for me, not to mention the lack of pops and the programability. Now that everything is in the "cloud", buying CD's has become obsolete. I can stream whatever I want, whenever I want, wherever I want. Sucks for records stores and artists, I know that. Having said that, my neighbor bought a bunch of high-end stereo stuff on Craig's List, brought it all up to speed mechanically and has a setup in his man-cave and we'll sip beverages while listening to vinyl. He wanted an intro to Tom Waits so we started from the beginning, made it to Blue Valentine and now he wants an intro to Joni. We'll start with Clouds at some point. I think the simplicity of the instrumentation and compositions will be more appealing to him than STAS. And, for the most part we use my tablet, plugged into his system rather than play vinyl. Similarly, I have a table that plugs into my Philips CD Burner. I use it to convert vinyl Joni covers to digital. Just got 3 albums this week in fact to do; 1 Woodstock, 1 River, 1 BSN. I do have to say that pulling out those vinyl records brings back a bunch of good memories.
