Instead of playing a lick or something chord based,he weaves a soundscape that is brilliantly evocative, spacious yet subtle, mysterious and haunting. Absolutely brilliant. Apart from Larry's own solo albums (the early ones like Room 335 and Strikes Twice) he plays some beautiful jazz guitar on Donald Fagen's Walk Between the Raindrops and of course is one of the principals on Steely Dan's Aja, The Royal Scam, and Gaucho. His solo on Kid Charlemagne stands as one of the most perfect guitar solos in all of rock and has been studied and transcribed in minute detail. On Joni's records he's usually more of a gorgeous watercolorist (Amelia or The Same Situation being good examples, or Otis and Marlena.) She's quoting Joni in defense of her latest release, "Red". In some interviews, she has the Cameron Crowe interview: "You have two options. You can stay the same and protect the formula that > gave you your initial success. Theyre going to crucify you for staying the > same. If you change, theyre going to crucify you for changing. But staying > the same is boring. And change is interesting. So of the two options, she > concluded cheerfully, Id rather he crucified for changing. > So she's been doing some homework and apparently feels a kinship. However, as the cinematic version of the "Les Miserables" musical is being released, it should be noted that she spent time in London auditioning for the role of Cosette. And that didn't work out for her. Given her public campaigning (like the recent photos), I think it's pretty clear that the filmmakers don't want her - but the suits do want her as Joni given her fan base. I'm not hopeful. - -------- If you haven't seen the Geffen documentary on PBS, it's worth a view. Joni appears a few times in the first third of the documentary. They have a "Free Man in Paris" snippet which is interesting. The documentary is a bit fawning and I thought they treated Laura Nyro badly. And there is a great quote about Neil Young and his music early on - which should have been juxtaposed against Geffen's lawsuit against Young for being the innovative, creative force that he is. It made me wonder what the conversations had been about Joni Mitchell if he sued Neil Young for being uncommercial. - -------- I was looking at some other Joni factoids when I cam across this in the Chronology for 2000: Joni was interviewed by Stephanie Bennett for the unreleased > documentary film *Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now And Then*. > What is this? Anyone know the story? There doesn't appear to be anything on IMDB. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2012 11:47:18 -0800 From: Shari Eaton Subject: Re: David Geffen PBS American Masters I enjoyed it immensely. Of course pretty much that whole song is metaphor. 'Well I'm learning, it's peaceful with a good dog and some trees' is pretty straightforward description but she brings it back around to that metaphor with 'the breakdown of this century'. I just ran through the lyrics in my head and I think the example I quoted is the only simile in the song. Interesting observation to ponder. There is going to be a little receptor somewhere in my brain now that is sifting through the lyrics whenever I'm listening to or singing a Joni Mitchell song.
