I thought it was an excellent piece of work, far better than so many "documentaries" that seem to be shaped entirely by what footage is available ("Straight, No Chaser" on Thelonious Monk, for instance.) There will be much posted here so I'll just get it going by wondering about Obama's rapid dismantling of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Did he have at all in mind what Geffen did to the Clintons? The film suggests (to me, anyhow) that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" put Geffen in Obama's corner and illustrated how, as one interviewee put it, "David's dog bites." Shari (I think) posted "Looks like the role isn't confirmed anyhow. She sure is milking it though." http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/taylor-swift-joni-mitchell-biopic-ro le-not-confirmed-20121022 From the above link, it was not clear to me whether the project was not confirmed, or TS playing Joni was not confirmed, or both. I will say that it sounds like a rather daunting project to create a triple-bio film. Hard to believe that any of the three fan bases (much less all of them) will end up fully satisfied. It makes her look more like Jean Shrimpton The face may be the "Shrimp" but the angle of the photo makes her legs look twice as long as her body, making her look more suitable for major league basketball. I am trying my best to not be a grumpy old woman about this whole film thing, but I have given in to the Grump.I wonder if folk of older generations felt as grumpy about films like The Glenn Miller Story years ago. If you were a great Miller fan would you feel that NO way could James Stewart could pass as the great Glenn and as June Allyson as Helen, well that was just ridiculous. As for being able to capture the mood of those dark war days, well that was impossible too. The films pass but the artists don't. Like several have said,at least younger people will be exposed to Joni's music and those with hearts and minds will find their way to her Greatness Anita x PS You may be interested to know that Glenn Miller took his final fatal flight from Twinwoods airport, five miles from our house and he and the band played here in Bedford several times. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2012 14:57:54 -0600 From: Jeannie Subject: can you please unsubscribe me Thanks! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2012 00:35:38 -0500 From: jlhommedieu@insight.rr.com Subject: Songs with Larry Carlton A friend of mine took some classes in jazz guitar back in the day. When I asked him if he's ever heard of Larry Carlton he thought I was pulling his leg ( as we say in the USA. I guess in the uk I would say he thought I was having him on). So I'm thinking of making a short compilation of Joni songs that have interesting bits played by Carlton. So far, I want to use Car On A Hill. What's your favorite? I think he was on djrd, thosl, and Hejira.
