The first chapter of the Monk book (which I read today) deals extensively with this topic, the name is "Lady Looks Like A Dude". She was inspired by the guy who passed her on the street to dress up as him (she originally named the character "Claude" and then changed it to Art Nouveau) and go to a Halloween party at Peter & Betsy Asher's house, where supposedly no one recognized her until she tool off her hat. Having read this new article Les posted: > Title: THE FLOWERING OF JONI MITCHELL > Publication: Telegraph > Date: 1991.2.23 > > http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2535 > I couldn't help noticing it includes another telling of the awakening of the character Art Noveau, to become an important persona in Joni's career. This is how it's told in this article: "She told me a story which was very revealing, about how she had been walking down Hollywood Boulevard one day, looking for a costume to wear to a Halloween party, 'when all of a sudden this black kid goes by with a New York walk you know, the diddybop, with one leg shorter than the other and the hand curled back and as he passed by he turned and gave me this most radiant grin and said, "Lookin' good, sister, lookin' good"' the mimicry is perfect 'And he gave me a grin, and it was such a genuine, sweet smile; it woke up the spirit in me. 'I began walking behind him, imitating his walk; he just took me into this very fun-loving mood, and he caught me at it, and laughed. So I thought, I know...I'm going to this party not as him, but as his spirit.' Outfitted with a blue polyester suit, a phallus-shaped cocaine-spoon, an Afro wig and copious amounts of Lena Horne pancake, Joni Mitchell thus embarked on a short, but apparently riotously eventful career at parties and social functions as a black man." I don't remember reading the tale quite like this before, however, my memory ain't that great these days, Happy Sunday Wotsmyname. Ps I do hope all my friends (and everyone else) are doing okay with the storm hitting you guys on the east coast. Keep safe and warm!
