However, I don't think that religion is the center of the song, so this wouldn't eliminate Dylan, but I still strongly doubt it. I think it is about a man (or composite of men) whom Joni had a relationship with. The lyrics are very intimate--like he's more than a friend. (I've always suspected James Taylor, but I have no evidence of that, and the "holiness" certainly fits Cohen more.)
