Its always nice to see her called a rock star. She received four recluse points. Within a week of a public appearance, no less! And let's not forget, she's almost 70. I find that, now that I'm edging up to 60, there is often a rapid decline in certain body parts. Almost overnight, even, unless we remain in denial for quite a while and wake up suddenly and discover The Horror! The crepey neck thing, for example - no wonder so many people, as they age, start wearing turtlenecks! I'm sure there's no plastic surgery in the world that can handle that. They can pull your face back and make you look like a cat person, but what would they do with all the turkey wattles? Sorry if I'm grossing anyone out, but you just have to laugh. I still think it's better just to get wrinkly, rather than look like all the cat people out there. Don't get me started on the young people that get "work" done when there's nothing wrong with them (physically, anyway.) >________________________________ > From: Dave Blackburn >To: FMYFL@aol.com >Cc: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com; joni@smoe.org >Sent: Wednesday, October 3, 2012 10:46:15 AM >Subject: Re: SJC: now Joni's album performance > >Are we all perhaps skirting around the nearly sixty years of smoking causing her rapid aging? > >On Oct 3, 2012, at 7:09 AM, fmyfl@aol.com wrote: > >> In a message dated 10/3/2012 9:41:03 AM Eastern Daylight Time, >> Bob.Muller@Fluor.com writes: >> >>> Looking at the Ruby Lake pictures, >>> she looks very frail and like she's aged 40 years since I saw her in 1998. >>> >>> Bob >>> >> >> I think part of it has to do with the way she's wearing her hair. >> >> Jimmy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2012 08:07:58 -0700 From: Betsy Subject: Re: Joni clunkers Azeem-I disagree with most of your opinions. I also feel out of step, but the songs I can't stand are old. Whole albums, like LOC and Clouds, are difficult for me to listen to. I can't consume Blue in one sitting, although I enjoy most of the individual songs. >As for specific songs I don't like, some of the usual suspects: Dancing Fool, Lead Balloon, Empty, Reoccurring Dream. The Windfall is truly ugly. I like all of those, especially Reocurring Dream. And I think The Windfall is gorgeous. Shine grew on me. There are some excellent songs, and I love that Joni plays piano again. Bad Dreams has a wonderful intro. Travelogue has more good songs than bad, as well. I really enjoy Joni's singing more post-NRH, although I feel like her voice peaked about a decade earlier. >To me Joni is now a heritage act. I think it's *dreadful*! And Travelogue is, well, *shudder*. I agree with some of this. I do think Mingus (plus S+L) is her last great album. I don't think CC is the last great song she's written, but I do love it more than anything she's written since. And I can't bear BSN or Travelogue. However, I do think a lot of her other post-Mingus albums are a good listen, particularly WTRF, NRH, and TI. Not great, but I obviously get more from them than you do. I will say that while I don't "hate" them, TtT and Shine do very little for me. I can listen to them, and that's about it. Having been raised on Wild Things Run Fast and Dog Eat Dog, I probably just have a different perspective than most. That makes sense. I'm older (okay, a lot older) than you, but the Geffen albums did come out while I was young and had been seriously listening to Joni less than a decade, and I do think that changes perspectives. Still, I can't say those albums have lasted like the 70s albums have. Some idiots thought it would be more humane to hook his cable to a trolley system so the picketed until it became law. Basically he got tangled and choked. My heart is broken.
