There are a LOT of corny, schmaltzy, mediocre and copycattish versions of BSN around, to the point where, if I hear that yet another artist is going to cover it, I just cringe. I really don't like the Judy Collins version. The arrangement is too bland, and a lot of covers use that version or a similar arrangement, rendered even blander, likely because Judy had the hit with it. In fact, I don't even like hearing Joni sing it anymore. Having said that, every now and then, that song will come on, either one of Joni's versions, or a cover, and I'll think, "Hey - that sounds good!" "Big Yellow Taxi" annoys the living crap out of me, no matter who sings it, because too many people just copy what someone else has already done. I don't mind the "Shine" version as much, but would still probably skip it eight times out of ten. I don't care for "the Circle Game" at all. I think I've heard it too often and it just seems interminable sometimes, especially that damn chorus about the seasons going round and round and the painted ponies going up and down - enough already! Likewise "Woodstock." Yeah, yeah, child of god, blah-blah-blah, although I do like "we are stardust/we are golden". "River" is heading towards "Make me wanna barf land" because there are just too many damn covers and now it seems to have morphed into a Christmas standard. The next thing you know, they'll be singing it in churches. Too bad, because I actually like that song, but other people are ruining it, damn them! I'm pretty much off most of "Clouds" with the exception of "Tin Angel," "I don't know where I stand," "I think I understand" and "that song about the Midway." Most of the time when I hear a Joni song played in a shopping mall, I want to yell, "She did write some other stuff, y'know!" >________________________________ > From: Betsy >To: joni@smoe.org >Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2012 4:57:28 PM >Subject: BYT and other hippie songs > >Big Yellow Taxi is one of the few Joni songs that you still hear in public. And it tops my list of songs that I wish she could unwrite. Maybe its the only song on my list....there are less popular songs I could do without, but they aren't foisted upon me at the pizza parlor. > >As for other disliked signature JM songs, Woodstock has its place in history. Chelsea Morning is also pretty corny, but Joni sings it so beautifully. Judy Collins' version is awful. For a long time, I thought I hated Both Sides Now and The Circle Game, but now I feel like they are deservedly classic. > >Does anyone else have songs they just hate?
