I was just reading someone else's thoughts - Laura Nyro? But I remember a long discussion about it being written about Valerie Carter. The lyrics seem to be about her- the time frame is right and someone mentioned that JB said on stage once, when he did That Girl Could Sing that he knee "right where she was right now" and looked over to where Valerie was singing backup.
