Thanks for your always kind words, sweet Sue - we share the drive to expand the Joni knowledge base, whether it's by finding covers of her songs or identifying tunings and chord patterns. And yeah, dem Mutts are something else - Joni folks of heart and mind to be sure. Regarding your question about the Scandinavian singer, I'm not sure but it's probably Irma Schultz, who first recorded a CD of Joni covers with a band that called itself "A Bird That Whistles" and more recently released another whole album's worth of Joni covers in Swedish language. Speaking of artists for whom English is NOT their primary language, I always love the non-English language versions because that takes the efforts to another level. Translating and still maintaining the balance, rhythm and poetry of Joni's words has to be an incredible challenge. Roxana Amed does "Amelia" in both English and Spanish on her CD. Her guitarist loved it so much that he recorded it too! And I'll never forget when I got the LP of an Estonian singer who translated THREE Joni songs into Estonian.Joni is loved the whole world over. As for Best cover for 2012...that would be an interesting competition indeed. Robin, you put that beautifully, in a way that anyone who has ever heard the Mutts music knows exactly what you mean. I am compelled to add, for the benefit of people who may feel, like Shari, that any cover of Joni's music can only be in the shadow of the original (which is how I felt before having heard your music): you actually enhance the original! This may sound like sacrilege, but it is true, I feel. You don't trump Joni's version, but you - lovingly, skilfully, artfully - incorporate it and carry it on a journey that I am sure Joni herself would also enjoy and identify with. Lots of love to you all, Lieve in London >________________________________ > From: Robin Adler >To: Mark >Cc: "Eaton, Shari" ; Dave Blackburn ; Catherine McKay ; joni@smoe.org >Sent: Wednesday, 29 August 2012, 4:40 >Subject: Re: Safaris to the Heart spreading itself about. > >Hi everyone, > >Here is my take. I do understand Shari's feeling about Joni covers but having listened to some of Bob's cover catalogue and David Gizara's radio show I see there is room for fresh interpretations of her songs. If you think of Joni as a composer and not just a performing artist it opens up a new world. Yes, many of her songs are personal but they are personal in a way many of us can relate to. When Dave and I put together the Mutts band it was never with the intention to make a recording - that came as a natural evolution as a band. The most profound thing that has occurred as a result of dedicating a band solely to Joni's music and playing live has been not just reinvigorating old fans of hers but introducing and helping to create new fans. I think performing live is the most important thing we do in honoring Joni. > >For us it is so much deeper than just enjoying the music and having success around it. We do this because there is no other music that compares in depth and beauty - to my ears at least. I can't even tell you how passionate we are about it. I'm the luckiest of lucky girls to have world class musicians backing me up and willing to play more often than not for next to nothing. > >Robin > > > > >On Aug 28, 2012, at 6:14 PM, Mark wrote: > >> Shari, >> >> I know exactly what you mean and I've felt that way myself for a long time. You won't be sorry. >> >> And I don't mean to detract from any musician who chooses to cover Joni's work. My hat is also always off to Mr. Mueller for his amazing ability to find so many versions of Joni's songs. It's such a tribute to her that there are so many out there. >> >> But I'm like you, Shari. I've always felt nobody sings Joni Mitchell as well as Joni Mitchell. There are few, to my ears, that can do her justice. Robin Adler is one of those few and she is backed by first rate musicians. The sound quality of the cd is also excellent, thanks to Robin's husband and ace guitar player, Dave Blackburn. >> >> Mark in Seattle >> Mutts of the Planet fan >> >> -----Original Message----- From: Eaton, Shari >> Sent: Tuesday, August 28, 2012 2:31 PM >> To: Dave Blackburn >> Cc: Catherine McKay ; joni@smoe.org list >> Subject: Re: Safaris to the Heart spreading itself about. >> >> Dave, >> >> Thanks for sharing. I'm really happy you guys are enjoying playing music and the success around that. I have a hard time listening to anyone but Joni sing her songs.
