Shari, I second Bob's assurance that what you feel about Joni's music is as valid as anyone's opinion. You could spend a life time just listening to Joni's versions of her own songs and be fulfilled. I appreciate the youtubes of Joni performances that you've sent, many of which I've never seen before. So much good comes from this remarkable group. And I also hope no one thinks it's ghastly when I say that there are Joni covers out there that are better than Joni's versions. And obviously, it's OK to embrace it all! I've always been a bit of a covers freak, sometimes a cover makes me appreciate an artist or a song more than I typically would. For instance, this morning driving to work I heard Rush's cover of Eddie Cochrane's "Summertime Blues". I would typically flip the switch upon hearing Geddy Lee's voice but I dug this recording a lot. And what I REALLY dig is when an artist takes a lump of Joni's genius and re-molds it into a brand-new thing; Laird Jackson's luscious Tin Angel, Roine Stolt's Sex Kills, obviously I could go on and on. Bottom Line - it's totally cool of you to stick to the Joni main street and you'll catch no grief from anyone here for doing so. Thanks for your always kind words, sweet Sue - we share the drive to expand the Joni knowledge base, whether it's by finding covers of her songs or identifying tunings and chord patterns. And yeah, dem Mutts are something else - - Joni folks of heart and mind to be sure. Regarding your question about the Scandinavian singer, I'm not sure but it's probably Irma Schultz, who first recorded a CD of Joni covers with a band that called itself "A Bird That Whistles" and more recently released another whole album's worth of Joni covers in Swedish language. Speaking of artists for whom English is NOT their primary language, I always love the non-English language versions because that takes the efforts to another level. Translating and still maintaining the balance, rhythm and poetry of Joni's words has to be an incredible challenge. Roxana Amed does "Amelia" in both English and Spanish on her CD. Her guitarist loved it so much that he recorded it too! And I'll never forget when I got the LP of an Estonian singer who translated THREE Joni songs into Estonian.Joni is loved the whole world over. As for Best cover for 2012...that would be an interesting competition indeed. On this covers thread, I will add that one thing they definitely offer is keeping this music heard in front of new audiences. Joni isn't doing it, and seems ambivalent towards her fans at the best of times. People continuing to play her music, whether or not it's as good as the real thing, introduces new audiences to it and serves to keep her out of the dustbin of retired pop stars. We've had many an audience member tell us at our shows that they thought they were already Joni Mitchell fans, but had no idea she wrote so much great music they'd never heard, and were now resolved to buy more of her records as a direct result of our show. We'll take a 15% kickback on that Ms. Mitchell if you please! Dave On Aug 29, 2012, at 7:37 AM, Susan Tierney McNamara wrote: > Thanks Robin and Dave and the band for all you do. Hi everyone, Here is my take. I do understand Shari's feeling about Joni covers but having listened to some of Bob's cover catalogue and David Gizara's radio show I see there is room for fresh interpretations of her songs. If you think of Joni as a composer and not just a performing artist it opens up a new world. Yes, many of her songs are personal but they are personal in a way many of us can relate to. When Dave and I put together the Mutts band it was never with the intention to make a recording - that came as a natural evolution as a band. The most profound thing that has occurred as a result of dedicating a band solely to Joni's music and playing live has been not just reinvigorating old fans of hers but introducing and helping to create new fans. I think performing live is the most important thing we do in honoring Joni. For us it is so much deeper than just enjoying the music and having success around it. We do this because there is no other music that compares in depth and beauty - to my ears at least. I can't even tell you how passionate we are about it. I'm the luckiest of lucky girls to have world class musicians backing me up and willing to play more often than not for next to nothing. I've always felt nobody sings Joni Mitchell as well as Joni Mitchell. There are few, to my ears, that can do her justice. Robin Adler is one of those few and she is backed by first rate musicians. Just want to throw my two cents in. I will always remember the first time I heard Safaris. It felt immediately familiar and welcoming - like a favorite pair of jeans found in the back of a closet. But after putting them on, you realize someone altered them or added some embroidery, making them fresh and new, but without losing any of the charm they originally had. It was a perfect balancing act of being respectful but not redundant. Then of course there was that wonderful performance in the park before the Joni tribute at the Hollywood Bowl. And let's not forget the concert DVD. Truly a remarkable performance. Now if I could only get my hands on a copy of the new version of Jungle Line! I haven't checked yet. Hopefully it's included on the JMDL fund raiser CD (I hope, I hope!).
