Differences in sound level aside, I don't hear a big difference in sound quality. It says on the booklet: 'mastered from the original master tapes' which isn't the same as 'remastered'. They simply made a new master from the original tapes. And since they obviously used better A/D converters than in 1985, there is unavoidably some added clarity - but that is not the same as 'proper' remastering. Jussi, Thank you for making this distinction. I never remember exactly which recordings were 'remastered' and which were 'mastered from the original master tapes'. DED was the first of Joni's new releases to come out on cd and I refused to buy the vinyl until I could get that cd because I love the fact that cds, with minimal care, do not scratch and degrade like vinyl does. Now all these years later I realize just how crappy some of the transfers onto cds were. I still feel like DED benefited immensely by the superior transfer in the Geffen box set. But that opinion also comes from listening to it with headphones and I always pick up more detail when the sound is coming directly into my ears.
