But ALL easy for you, just click here: http://tinyurl.com/cvbd4km ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Aug 2012 07:21:24 +0200 From: "rong g" Subject: searching for sugarman NJC So - I wonder (pun which most probably won't get) how many listers have heard of sixto rodriguez? quite a story he released a couple of albums way, way back - "cold fact" (1970) & "after the fact"(1971). they both sank without a trace pretty much everywhere in the world - except in south africa, and to a lesser extent in australia & new zealand. Here in south africa "cold fact" has become hugely popular, & it has been estimated, has even outsold elvis!!! rodriguez himself, blissfully unaware of this - went back to his life as a roofing contractor in Detroit .... In south africa the record continued selling - no one knew anything about the muso & rumours abounded that he had committed suicide.... A couple of years back, a record shop owner in cape town decided to find out about this mythical Rodriguez & tracked him down. Needless to say - he was a little bit surprised to find out that the lp which sank without a trace had sold heaps & heaps of copies (the record companies won't say just how many) - without him even being aware - or receiving any royalties whatsoever..... So - a tour was arranged & the unknown muso toured - playing to huge audiences who knew every word to every one of his songs. being recognised in the streets & having your songs sung back at you by strangers.... Can you imagine it - finding out you've had such a huge fan base & were never even aware of it. That you are widely regarded as a songwriter / poet - & you've been working as a roofing contractor all your life..... A tv documentary of the search was made & released a while back. Now - it's been made into a movie - "searching for sugarman" (one of his songs was called "Sugarman) & released internationally. Greatly successful at sundance & internationally - it has suddenly made the world aware of the man, his music, & the story. (also - i guess - the record companies!!) Village records say this about "cold fact" " This is the kind of album that is referred to as a lost gem without a trace of irony, or overstating. Part singer songwriter, part psychedelic minstrel, part gritty poet. Leading off with "Sugar Man" and winding it's way through a sonic landscape that will leave the listener wondering why have I never heard of this guy before. This one will still be with you long after the last cut finishes." More about the movie & some links here: http://dailymaverick.co.za/article/2012-08-03-resurrecting-rodriguez so go see the movie, & get a copy of "cold fact". No - it's not as good as joni - but is definitely well worth a listen........ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2012 11:17:15 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers 149 - Just in case anyone is still there Wow, mighty quiet out here in Joniland...Hello!
