[Dave Blackburn My next-door neighbor is in his 30's and loves vinyl and high-end stereo. I've given him Hejira and DJRD on vinyl, but we hadn't spun either one much until last week. He had just picked up some monster Infinity speakers on Craigslist, cleaned and repaired them and was ready to show them off. I pulled DJRD and played side 1, because that Overture/Cotton Avenue is so amazing in BIG sound. He loved it and Talk To Me and Jericho as well. We didn't get into lyrics much, we were just enjoying the sonics of the record, so I can definitely relate to what you're talking about. Obviously this didn't sit well with Joni, but it did coax a good song out of her. Next time I sing it I'll know what she was talking about and yes it is a great song which happily makes sense to me now. Thanks for that, Bob.Gosh they're all so personal. You got a copy of her diary or something? how the heck do you get info like that ? It is great reading everyone's Joni progressions. I have to say though that you are missing out on some truly magnificent sounds not listening to Hejira. Try Song for Sharon for starters and that might ease the journey there. Refuge of the Roads too. Strange Boy took me a long time .and I go along with you that it is a difficult one to get into.It was a very fruitful experience for me .I think though that she shows true humility in that she has no delusions about herself. she confesses to being egoic which in itself is evidence of humility :Know thyself ! Her honesty though is probably quite shocking. A wonderfully bare winter offering. The perfect album in my book but scary coming from the sweet young songstress of before. All these posts about albums that grew on us over time endorse the importance of the ALBUM as a format. Although individual tracks might grow on you over time they are like atomized sentences (the Twitter phenomenon) instead of as a coherent set of paragraphs making a cogent argument. The demise of the album format is very unfortunate for both the serious artist and the fans alike. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2011 #917 ***************************** ------- To post messages to the list, send to joni@smoe.org.
