I bought her Wildflowers album, which also turned me on to Leonard Cohen. I knew Joni had written those songs, but hadn't heard her versions - I probably didn't pick up STAS because they weren't on it. In May of 1969 I was dating a girl (I still called them girls in those days) who was a live-in maid on Hillgreen Drive in Beverly Hills. One evening in the maid's quarters (!) she played me two new albums, Clouds and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. I was immediately hooked on both albums and artists, and got to see them a few months later when Joni opened for CSN&Y at the Greek Theatre in LA. From then on, I got each new album as it came out, but it was a year or so until I picked up STAS. (Do you remember how bad the vinyl version of that was - the muddy sound?) In the 70-80s I was a member of the Columbia House record club, so got them that way. I hung in for a long time, even though WTRF, CMIARS and DED did nothing for me - I probably played each LP once. Then I gave up, and didn't buy NRH. It wasn't until i joined this group in 1996 and started hearing NRH songs at gatherings that I bought it, and it is now one of my favorites, after Hejira and HOSL, I've seen her perform eighteen times, and not performing twice. I didn't mind Joni's ventures into jazz, but I missed her more personal songs - I didn't want to hear about Killer Kane or Beethoven, I wanted to hear about her boyfriends - shallow twit that I was,,,and probably still am. :) Bought TTT, TI, Shine, but they haven't really grabbed me - except for Sex Kills. Just want to say again what a blessing this group has been in my life. So many great friends and great experiences. Such hospitality, such kindness Much love to all! *************************************************** Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA FAR-West (Folk Alliance Region - West) tinkersown@ca.rr.com www.far-west.org ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2011 #909 ***************************** ------- To post messages to the list, send to joni@smoe.org.
