Loved it, especially California and Carey. The album worked out better than the romance. Bought For The Roses shortly after release, and loved Electricity, Cold Blue Steel, and Radio, but nothing else blew me away. Didn't get a lot of play at the time, but that all changed eventually. Got C&S when it first came out and played the hell out of it. Turned me in a serious Joni fan, and made me go back and re-listen to FTR and buy Ladies of the Canyon. LotC wasn't my favorite. Like some of the songs, but thought her voice was a little shrill. As much as I admired Joni by this time, I still wasn't motivated to see her in concert yet, even though I was (and still am) a major concert goer. Didn't see her live until Jaco, Pat Metheny tour. I've seen her numerous times since, but regret not seeing any of those earlier shows. Someone mentioned seeing her at the Auditorium Theater and Ravinia. Just thinking how great that would be, brings a tear to my eye. MOA was bought the day it was released. Loved it then, still love it today. Annual spring time ritual includes blasting MOA while driving around in my car on the first beautiful day of spring. Got in a car accident once during this annual event. I was so wrapped up in the music and singing my ass off, that I clipped a car with my spare tire (mounted on the side of my jeep). Oops! HOSL - WTF???? Props to Joni for trying something new, but I just didn't get it. My roommate loved it and played it all the time, but it left me cold (except for Jungle Line, which I loved upon first listen). Hejira - Bought the day it came out hoping it wouldn't be a "bust" like HOSL (which I still didn't like). Got goose bumps - almost felt violated, I related to it so closely. How could this woman know so much about me and what I was going through. A couple of months later, the HOSL light went on, and now I can't understand why I didn't get it. Bought every single Joni after this on the day it came out. DJRD - I was broke at the time, but desperate to get this so I traded in 11 used albums. To this day, its the Joni I play the most (though I consider Hejira my favorite). When ever I'm showing off my home stereo, I always play this - at least the Overture. Jaco's bass just kills me on this cut. Mingus - Took a little more work than Hejira and DJRD, but for the most part I liked it right off the bat - especially Wolf and Dry Cleaner. Anxiously looking forward to Chicago Jazz Ensemble and Meshell Ndegeocello's take on this album this Friday night! S&L - Took over my car stereo for months. This was the first tour I actually saw of Joni's, so it was great to have a recording of these shows. When my car got broken into and my cassette player was stolen, I was more bummed out the S&L was in the player at the time and now couldn't listen to it even at home. Clouds and STAS - Somewhere in this time frame I went back and bought these early releases. Still not my favorites. I still prefer the jazzier Joni and her more "mature' voice. WTRF - First major disappointment for me. Some great stuff (Chinese Cafe, Moon at the Window) but for the most part I really didn't like this and still don't. A happy Joni just isn't my cup of tea I guess. Underneath the Streetlight my least favorite Joni. Dog Eat Dog - I really enjoy this, and it's my wife's favorite Joni of all time (go figure). The production doesn't really bother me, though I wouldn't mind hearing stripped down versions of several of these songs. Tax Free sums up my feelings about most Evangelical Ministers - at least the ones on TV. Chalkmark is what it is. Not what I was hoping for, but I could live with it till the next Joni came out. NRH - Ah, that's better. A return to form for Joni. TI - Ah, that's even better. Really loved this one. Not Hejira, but something I could sink my teeth into. TTT - Like it, but agree it would be better if she didn't rely so heavily on the VG8. BSN - Got sucked in and bought the dreaded Hat Box package. While I liked the art work included, I had to return it 3 times before I got a copy that would play. Got into this for a while, but seldom get's played these days. Travelogue - Liked this better than BSN. Favorite memory was playing this while driving through the countryside on my way to my first JoniFest. Still like to listen to this when driving through the country. Shine - Really like this, especially on my stereo at home. For me, the production on the album works, though I can understand why others are put off by it. I think there's a timeless beauty to it, synthesizers and all (kind of like Wish You Were Here, or I Robot). Sorry for rambling, but this was kind of fun.
