Not to be argumentative, but I have to disagree on this. The average person in 1971 (top single that year: Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World") could barely comprehend "Blue," let alone the sophistication of "Hejira." Not that the average person's musical taste has changed, mind you ... I doubt most people could comprehend "Hejira" now. Not meaning to be a music snob, just sayin'.
