Because of the very points Roger Ebert makes it is that much more important for movie goers to support small & independent theatres, whose seating may be comfortable, but not the strato loungers cineplexs offer. Those small kind of theatres need our support. Those kind of movies need our support as much as talented local musicians need our support. Dare I say, "there is something lost, but something gained" when going to any event that is attended by others. That is part of the experience: sitting in the dark, sharing a story with strangers - linked for a little bit by the shared experience. Part of being entertained - or viewing art - is to suspend judgement for a bit & try to find a different perspective. I would not paint all movie & film experiences with the broad brush of general dissatisfaction & disgust. Don't see junk mass entertainment movies or wait until the crowds have died down, if you must. If "gangstas" frequent that theatre, then don't return, but not all audiences are like that. Don't go to the bad movies & support the indie voices and festivals in your area. Make a point of going out of your way to see a good movie. I speak with some experience. I volunteer at a local non-profit first run/indie movie theatre. We keep our prices reasonable, our concession prices are totally w/i reach & we offer small popcorn because our Cinema members demand it. The people there are interesting, all like movies, even though some have bad audience habits - audiences are like that. That is my 2 cents worth, on this gray Northwest afternoon. I may go out to a movie tonight ! GREETINGS FROM THE TRIPLE M Down a gravel road, where the barb wire meets the sky. MARY M.
