These are the interviews with Joni that I savor. Listening to her talk in detail about her philosophy, process, and experiences with songwriting, playing guitar, and life in general. This interview finally made me stop and think - what is the real influence of Miles Davis on her music? She mentions a devotion to him that goes back to high school and I didn't realize it influenced her that early. Hmmmm ... if anyone is up to discussing that, I would love to read ... I know I read it before but it goes along perfectly with the Saskatoon interview. This is my favorite quote, a propos of the season: bI never wanted to be a star. I didn't like entering a room with all eyes on me. I still don't like the attention of a birthday party. I prefer Christmas, which is everybody's holiday.b b: Take care, Sue From: Vincenzo Mancini [mailto:vincmancini@yahoo.it] Sent: Wednesday, December 21, 2011 5:01 PM To: Susan Tierney McNamara; joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: Lifetime Achievement Award Sue, I had memories of having read that, in her high school years, some guy payed her with a Miles Davis record for having painted a wall in his apartment, but I am probably mixing different stories or some different versions may have been givenb& Anyway, that's what I found searching the library (excerpt from "Off the record", book by John Smith, 1988) "b& in high school, I was kind of like the school artist. I did backdrops for school plays, I was always involved in illustrating the yearbooks. I designed a UNICEF Christmas card for a guy who was like the school leader, the senior watchman. He reimbursed me with a Miles Davis album." I'm not sure that the link will be working... http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=13&from=search Even if not consciously acknowledged as an influence, at least back in the sixties, she should have been absorbing Miles sound Sometimes she would seem to refer to him in order to show that she shares a path similar to his, in some way, as well as artistic freedom... Didn't she compare herself to him and Picasso recalling that every time they changed their style (and woman) they had been harshly criticized?
