[Patti Parlette Subject: Joni: "You're my favorite work of art!" Dear Joniamigos: It's coming on Christmas, so I'm popping in to say hello and share a Joni "love is a story told." I had a brainstorm (like lightning from above!) a few months ago. My best friend (the one I met in a college apartment in 1975 who put Blue on the turntable and turned to ask: Do you like Joni Mitchell?) has a nephew whose girlfriend is a young local artist. I once asked her about doing a Joni work of art (she has done Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia and Leonard Cohen, I believe) and we finally made a deal. This will be the coolest Christmas gift for Janis AND her daughter, Tara, (Hi Terra!) who is also a Joniphile. (We saw the BSN Tour in May 2000 together.) Ha. My first commissioned work of art! How patrician, n'est-ce pas? Ashleigh Kay (not our Kay Ashley!) really got into it. Here are two messages from her. (I asked her if it was okay to share them w/ the JMDL. She said sure, but what does that stand for? Joni Mitchell Diehard Lovers?) I think you will all appreciate her enthusiam for our project. "Hi Patti! I'm excited to share with you that the Joni art is finished! I really, really enjoyed this project...more than I could've expected. I've done a lot of studying of Joni, watching her performances, listening to her music and looking at lots and lots of pictures. The most important thing to me when using someone's image is for the finished piece to be reminiscent of that person and their essence, and I've got to say, this piece is very Joni :) There are a lot of subtleties that connect to her as well as a subtle reference to the Blue album for you & Janis. I had said the piece would be somewhere around 10" in dimension, I decided on a 9" x 12", which looks really nice, I also ended up using the picture you sent me of her in the window smiling, as well as a couple others. I was just so captured by her beauty, I couldn't use just one. All that's left is for me to wire it for hanging and take a picture of it for my records, which I'll be doing tomorrow. And in my excitement of doing this project, I completely forgot to get a deposit, lol! So when we meet to make the exchange, it'll be the full $xxx. Let me know when you'd like to meet up. Sometime next week would be good for me. Excited to show it to you! "> Ashleigh :) " Next email: "Oh I'm happy you're excited! Joni has a beautiful soul and I loved working with her image, it was truly inspiring :) The Blue reference is subtle, but I feel that makes it more special to those who know what it means. How about this coming Tuesday the 13th? I get out of work in Manchester at 2:30 and we could plan to meet about 3:00, and yes a check is totally fine, if you could just make it out to my full name, Ashleigh Kay Vose, I'd greatly appreciate it :) Once I get a good picture of it, I'll email it to you too :) "> Ashleigh" So, I'm off to Starbucks (the same one where I heard the THREE-HOUR Joni retrospective the day SHINE was released, September 25th, 2007 -- Starbucks, Starbucks, you got the Joni lovin' that I like all right...) to pick up what I'm sure will be "my favorite work of art." But now I'm wrestling with my eeeeeego -- I'm selfish and I'm sad because I want to keep it for myself! Please, this is a secret (doo wah doo) for just JMDLers and not Facebook just at this moment of the world. Peace & Love, Patti P. in Flip City P.S. "Racing away" w/ no time to proof read, so please forgive all errors....we laugh at how our perfection will always be denied!
