I have my CDs stashed here and there around my apartment, sometimes in boxes that are piled on top of other boxes. I had them in alphabetical order (by artist - for the most part) so, if I buy something new, it's a pain in the ass trying to re-order things again, so the new stuff tends to get stashed elsewhere and the whole alpha order thing is destroyed. So, if I'm looking for a particular CD, or trying to remember whether or not I own it (before buying it possibly again), it's a big deal. And I agree with Rob: do NOT go on itunes drunk! >________________________________ > From: kbhla >To: 'Robert Procyk' >Cc: joni@smoe.org >Sent: Tuesday, November 29, 2011 2:30:35 AM >Subject: RE: impulse buying (njc) > >Hahaha, Rob! Some of which might be applied to how some of us perceive the lack of music from Joni Mitchell. At least that's the path my brain took me whilst listening. I had forgotten some of her songs, and it was so nice to hear Make it go away (is that the title), as well as Among Angels...which is on the new album, 50 words for snow. Delightful Steven Fry narrates the 50 words .. all in all...very interesting work . WTF?> Apologize for liking The Style Council? WTF? Their first album is brilliant. "My Ever Changing Moods" is one of my favorite songs ever, can't sit still when it's on. Also loved "The Paris Match", "You're The Best Thing"...hell, that whole record. Wore it out and upgraded it to CD early on. Anyway, great post. I think Joni is a big movie fan. Her song "Hana" is based on a movie that was based on a book; likewise, "Night of the Iguana" is based on the movie that was based on the Tennessee Williams play that was, in turn, based on his own short story. I'm sure there are other obvious instances like that, but so many of her songs are also very cinematic and the descriptions so detailed that you can see what she's talking about ("Edith and the Kingpin" is the example that springs immediately to mind." And then again there's "In France..." where she talks about "thrilling to the Brando-like things that he said," and the whole James Dean/Rebel without a cause thing going on in the "Shadows and Light" film/DVD. http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=1666&from=search I just stumbled across something on jonimitchell.com that I didn't know was there - people commenting on the website. If the link below works well, you will find comments from two people about "The Beat of Black Wings" being based on "The Looking-Glass War." The stories we've heard Joni say about it is that she really did meet a guy named Kyle at a military base where she performed. (The first comment is from Nov/09 and the second from April/11 - that's an 18-month gap, so I don't see the possibility of commenting on the website as a replacement for smoe, that's for sure!) http://jonimitchell.com/music/album.cfm?id=16.0&from=search >________________________________ > From: Mark >To: joni >Sent: Sunday, November 27, 2011 2:54:52 AM >Subject: Did Joni ever see Breakfast at Tiffany's? > >I just watched it. During the party sequence there's a woman (although she's no beauty) looking into a mirror laughing hysterically. A few seconds later she's crying and her eye paint's running down. Walking around the 5 and 10 looking for something to shoplift, Audrey Hepburn puts a lampshade on her head. In one scene she's sitting in a window, strumming a guitar. And in the climactic scene of the movie, there's a big yellow taxi and a lost cat. Joni would have been around 17 when the movie came out in 1961. > >Mark in Seattle ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2011 #654 ***************************** ------- To post messages to the list, send to joni@smoe.org.
