Was that on Rosie O'Donnell? Ok, so some of these are a stretch. We had pork roast for dinner yesterday. Travis didn't feel like bothering with a turkey and that was fine with me. Delicious meal with Melanie as our guest. None of us have family in town and we don't like being the outsider at someone else's family gathering. So we have a tradition that the three of us have Thanksgiving and usually Christmas dinner together. It's nice, relaxed, no dysfunctional stuff to deal with. Has she ever sang about turkeys or any meat for that matter. I think she sings about cookin fish but that could be me mixing her up with jesus after the resurection...his best album in my opinion. i know the frying pan was too wide at one point but she didnt mention what she might be cookin in it and i know she was sitting on her groceries at the empire hotel but again never let on to what was in her shopping bag. any ideas ? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Nov 2011 10:37:54 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Song for Sharon now T-giving and foods and NJC I guess it was pretty elitist-sounding of me and I'm spoiled rotten for living in a big city where you can get pretty much anything, and, if I wanted to go shopping for food at 3 a.m., I could just cross the street. It never occurred to me that you couldn't get that stuff everywhere, given the way the food industry is now. I certainly remember being a kid in small-town near-northern-Ontario where we just didn't have the choices we have now. (I feel I'm turning into my parents where getting an orange at Christmas was a big deal!) We ate a lot of canned stuff in winter then, and I never liked it. I was a picky eater and I used to stuff my cheeks full of food like a chipmunk, then excuse myself to go to the bathroom and spit it out because I hated it so much. Or I'd have standoffs with my mother and just sit there staring at my food and taking forever to eat even one moutful, then I'd get the story about the starving kids in (name your country), and then my mother would finally, after an hour of this going on, break down and ask me just to eat ONE forkful and then I could be done. Just thinking about beef jerky, or any kind of meat-sticks, gives me the creeps. Funny about the cheap avocados though. Here they probably cost twice that much, but things are generally cheaper in the US of A anyway. >________________________________ > From: Lori Fye >To: Catherine McKay >Cc: Joni List >Sent: Friday, November 25, 2011 11:22:56 AM >Subject: Re: Song for Sharon now T-giving and foods and NJC > > >> I've lost 45 pounds since mid-February, so I may be doing something right >> after all these years. > >Wow, congrats! > >Living in North Dakota now, it's all about meat. I've never seen so much beef jerky and so many "meat sticks" in my life. Every store carries several brands, styles, and flavors, and it's always prominently displayed near the cash register. The jerky that comes in the "chew" container, mimicking tobacco chew, cracks me up. I think that's mostly because I use nasal snuff and I can't help but wonder what would happen if I tried to sniff ground jerky. (My mind works in these strange ways, what can I say?) > >It's also all about processed foods here. Not a lot of fresh veggies or fruits, and most of what is available is rather expensive, although I must say that we seem to get a lot of avocados and they've lately been selling cheap: 88 cents apiece. Makes me wonder if they're "real" avocados or ... ? > >Lori >Tioga, ND ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Nov 2011 07:51:09 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Song for Sharon now T-giving and foods and NJC My mother used to make a ham AND a turkey - jeez! I can't stand most pork though and never could, especially roast pork - yuk! Ham grosses me out, although I will still very occasionally have a ham-and-swiss sandwich. I will admit I sometimes eat bacon, but I'm heading towards vegetarianism anyway. Since my kid already is one, it's easier not to have to make two meals. Often I'll make a veggie dish and stirfry chicken for my daughter who's not ready to give it up just yet. Sometimes I'll have a bit of chicken, but less than half of what I used to eat, and sometimes I'll just eat the veg dish. I don't like tofu either (it's boring and overly processed and I don't care to eat a lot of processed foods for a whole bunch of reasons.) Lately, if I eat meat, I just get a belly ache after, so I think my body is getting used to the veggie options. Between that and joining Weightwatchers online, I've lost 45 pounds since mid-February, so I may be doing something right after all these years. >________________________________ > From: Lori Fye >To: Joni List >Sent: Friday, November 25, 2011 10:27:10 AM >Subject: Re: Song for Sharon now T-giving and foods and NJC > >> Perhaps too good, since the turkey industry has been trying to make turkey >> "not just for Christmas and Thanksgiving!" but without a lot of success. > >The turkey industry still has to compete with the ham industry, as ham >remains a popular entree for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I didn't think it was elitist-sounding, but then I moved to ND from the SF Bay Area, where you can get anything, anytime. In Tioga it's different, but "different" is what I wanted. Here, most shops close at 5 or 6 pm, except for the (only) grocery store, which stays open until 9 pm during winter and until 10 pm during summer. (We don't have autumn or spring, you see ... j/k!) We do have a gas station that has a convenience store and a liquor store (in separate rooms), and I think it's open 24 hours a day. It's not quite a half mile from where I work (and live; I live in the newspaper office since there are no rooms, apartments, or houses available for rent or purchase in the area), and if I felt desperate for a bag of chips I could go there. The grocery store does not sell alcohol (except for the first aid kind), but all of the bars offer "off sale" beer, wine, and liquor. One of the bars even has a drive-up window so you only have to freeze your face and hands in order to do the transaction (rather than getting out of the car and freezing your entire body). I actually like the shopping limitations here, but then I'm not a fan of shopping in the first place, so it appeals to me that people must STOP shopping after a certain time day. : ) Lori Tioga, ND ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Nov 2011 14:16:13 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Song for Sharon now T-giving and foods and NJC The turkeys have nothing to be thankful for.
