I remember on one set she says "I wrote this song today" and then proceeds to sing a rough but incredible version of Cactus Tree, singing "she hopes that one will ask her for eternity" a line she quickly changed later ... This is a really great performance of an embryonic All I Want from the Pink Dress concert of 1970: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQpZXUGRy1U I think with both this song and the longer Conversation, Joni edits down to a version that is more universal, and she takes out some of the more angry primary color emotions ... a great look into Joni's writing process and why she is such an amazing songwriter. The guitar's still tentative, not really settled into the syncopated rhythm yet. Think she was right to cut that third verse?... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QjQY8U3eN4&feature=related Best wishes to all.
