There are a LOT of River covers, and a LOT of nice ones. When I get back to the USA I'll get back to cranking out new volumes and I'll load 'em up with Rivers just in time for the holidays. After all, nothing fills you with the joy of the season like Joni's "morbid" song about a love affair gone bad. I posted on another website just how much I love River and their covers. I think the song is one of Joni's strongest in the sense that it is easy to cover well. So many of Joni's songs have been perfected by Joni and, to my mind, cannot be covered easily. It may be because so many great Joni songs really require a jazz background and an intelligence that is lacking in many. Maybe that's why Cassandra Wilson, Norah Jones, and Natalie Merchant seem to cover Joni so well. With River, you need a sense of hurt and remorse but not a great set of pipes. Robert Downey Jr's version is a proof of this -- I think it's stunning. And lyric change aside, I really like J.T.'s version because he imbues it with so much J.T. that it's like a completely different song. Yep, it's Xmas time in L.A. again! Time to play me some River.
