What? You couldn't get Tom Scott? :-) Or maybe get Robben Ford or Steve Carlton and then you can sit back and enjoy the show, Dave. All kidding aside, this is a WONDERFUL coup. You know I'd be there if I could. Bob NP: Janis Ian, "Billie's Bones" From: Dave Blackburn To: Joni Mitchell Sent: Tuesday, September 13, 2011 9:42 PM Subject: Mutts of the Planet perform Blue & Court & Spark with surprise special guest. Dear Joni friends, I am happy to announce an upcoming Joni extravaganza concert on Sunday Nov 6th (happy 68th birthday Joni!) at Dizzy's in San Diego at 7pm. http://dizzysjazz.com/calendar.php Robin Adler and Mutts of the Planet will perform the Blue and Court and Spark albums in their entirety, and guess who will be playing bass? Max Bennett!! Yes, indeed, the man who recorded Court and Spark in the first place! Max said he would love to play with us after receiving our Safaris to the Heart CD and we are honored to have him join us. We need to pack the place so if you can get yourself to San Diego that night you should, or if you know anyone who would want to come to this please spread the word. This is our biggest undertaking yet and should be a Joni night to remember. best wishes, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2011 15:29:21 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: Attn UK joni listers The BBC is streaming 4 1968 Joni performances, but we can't get them in the US http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/showcase/clips/p00kpj0v Anyone able to capture this stream? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2011 19:47:51 +0100 From: Paul Castle Subject: Who says Dylan's a Plagiarist? I loved his take on recording with Joni, and how in control of the process she was. I would have loved to been a fly on the wall while she was recording vocal overlays. I find those arrangements probably the most amazing in her catalogue, especially on Court and Spark. I was also fascinated by his take on The Joni Letters. I really love this album but to tell you the truth I felt myself nodding about Herbie's tinkling. Don't get me wrong, I love Herbie Hancock and think he's a genius but his interpretations of Joni's melodies changed the songs. On first listen I had to check the liner notes to see what song he was playing, especially Sweet Bird. I only say this in the sense that I can see how Max Bennett would feel that way but I still think the Joni Letters is a wonderful album and a great tribute to Joni (and also deserved the Grammy). Again great job Dave. Who are you interviewing next? :-) Sue - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Les Irvin Sent: Monday, September 12, 2011 6:24 PM To: Joni List Subject: Interview with Max Bennett Brand new on JoniMitchell.com, Dave Blackburn's interview with bassist Max Bennett. Very interesting read with lots of Joni tidbits. Thanks for the clarification, Gary - and what a great treasure you have! You're right about Woodstock, definitely a summer of '69 thing. The only other comment I'll make regarding that program is that I wouldn't necessarily call DAD a "blues number"... Things are cool here in China, but it's definitely starting to wear thin. Ready to be home again, about 2 more months before that happens. As for being safe, China is VERY safe - - unless you're trying to cross the street that is.
