One of my favorite (and unfortunately true) Paul Simon lines is "the music suffers but the music business thrives". Yet, I have discovered only in the past year three artists that, to me, are bucking this trend with a vengeance. Joe Pug, Josh Ritter, and Kristian Matsson (aka The Tallest Man on Earth). Intelligent, witty, vital, and oh so good. I've compiled a sampler package of these three artists, download it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8377478/JoeJoshKristian.zip Here are their websites: http://www.joepugmusic.com/ http://joshritter.com/ http://www.myspace.com/thetallestmanonearth They need to be heard, and they all have something to say. Go buy their music! Thank you Laura for posting it. I have never NEVER heard her version of it before. It is a good one too, of course....how can it be less than great ? This is La Joni we are talking about. Happy The Man and Laura turned me on to her at ACL this past weekend. Also an amazing set from Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. This song has become an earworm for me in my time at the computer this afternoon. I'm glad I'm not at work, so I can just sink into the sumptuosness of the experience. Does anyone else play Joni over & over & over & over again, till it feels like blood ? I had a college roommate who complained that I played Joni over & over again & I wasn't even high ! This version is so far superior to the cd version, it makes me want to hear her next cd in this manner. I liked SHINE, don't get me wrong - a more refined take on her DED, but this approach - a mature, philosophical, deeply felt Joni at this stage in her life is what I want to hear. Not that she was ever anything less than all that - but to hear her take on things now, well that's what we all hope for, isn't it ? Anyone know if she's going to put out a cd ? I haven't been able to find any news to that effect. GREETINGS FROM THE TRIPLE M Down a gravel road, where the barb wire meets the sky. MARY M. Like you I'd love to hear something warmer, less synthetic sounding, piano or Parker, doesn't matter. So many of her peers are still doing such great stuff. As for new stuff; no, there's nothing on the horizon at the moment. Not that she needs to do anything else with the body of work she has given. Then again, there should be enough going on around her and in her own life to inspire her to create. It'll be on her upcoming album "Someone To Watch Over Me", and lest you think she's only dragging out the same ol' same ol', she's also covering Depeche Mode and Tears For Fears as well as ABBA. (Looks like Rob HAS to get this record - no Stevie covers though) Bob NP: The Doors, "LA Woman" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2011 17:51:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: The Return of the Singer/Songwriter NJC Thanks, Les. The one whose lyrics I found myself paying most attention to (just first listen though) is Joe Pug. These guys are definitely worth listening to. >________________________________ >From: Les Irvin >To: Joni List >Sent: Tuesday, September 20, 2011 2:37:10 PM >Subject: The Return of the Singer/Songwriter NJC > >Joniphiles- > >Where have I been for the past 5 years or so?
