[shadows and light Subject: Holycombe 2011 - strangely NJC Hello all I have been meaning to write for a while but it has been hectic post "fest" This was a lovely gathering of JMDL souls and a few of their friends. Holycombe has a magic of its own and the gatherings we have had there seem to take on their own form. In 2008 we had such a performance centred Fest with the excellent Dave and Robin and their friends Barry and Delene leading the evenings. This time we were very much a group of people who - for a large part-could either sing or play guitar - happily both at the same time in some instances - and Martin Giles tookthe role of the human juke box and played all the songs from a song book we put together with some songs that every one could join in with. There were some amazing performances from Martin Giles William Waddell, Les Ross, Chris Marshall, Strings, Anita, and some great singing by Garret who really needs to get to grips with the reality that he has a cracking voice. High points included Carey as a slow song by Will and Night in the City ..Lovely to meet him as I had not met him before. Good too, to see John Van Tiel, Bene from Denmark, Lieve and also Steph. Additionally spending time with Cat McKay is time well spent as the wit and dry commentary is such a treat. Adriano and Licia could not join us as he is ill and please, if you know him, send him your best as he is stuck in hospital at the moment trying to get well enough to have more treatment. He remains immensely buoyant and forwards looking. I think it was great that Patrick Leader and Strings were totally trounced in the Song Game in the pub, and Garret and I were valiant again. 2-0 to us I think! Last time we beat Mr Muller.... AHEM! But Fest is about so many things and Holycombe is about friends meeting, united initially by their enjoyment of Miss Mitchell and her music - but what Les Irvin and the founders of this list have done is to bring together people who when they meet actually really have something else in common. Fest is about that, it is about making friends of the people you have never met in the flesh. I have shared some of the best moments of my life at Fests and whether they have been large or small they are lodged in my memory as key moments. Thank you those that came - and Suzy, Bobby, Paola and my chap Merv, who took the time to join their friends at a gathering of people whom they had never previously met. It takes courage and I think they have remained un traumatised.. It really was a lovely few days and one I will arrange again if so desired. In a couple of years but it will happen again. All good things to you all Lucy I count all the JMDLers who came to Holycombe as ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Sep 2011 02:35:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Holycombe 2011 - strangely NJC < Last time we beat Mr Muller.... AHEM!> Well, it's like they say...tell a lie enough and it becomes the truth. Joni certainly has a couple of stories that fall into this category. Thanks for putting it together Lucy, and sorry that I couldn't make it. Sounds like a beautiful time. Maybe I can put together a Jonifest in Beijing! Ha. Oh, but I will say that yesterday when I was having my traditional steak and eggs Sunday breakfast at the Element Fresh restaurant, they played Norah Jones' "Court & Spark". A Joni appearance in Beijing is always a surprise. Somebody gave my not very Joni-interested man a book called "Apathy for the Devil" by Nick Kent. I picked it up, it opened randomly precisely on the double page where the author talks about meeting - well who do you think... He is at some party, and Joni is there looking clouds and icy altitudes and he acknowledges her talent and influence but says how grateful he is that he actually never got to meet her.... Then yesterday we watched "Who is Harry Nilsson", and somebody says that for Midnight Cowboy, they asked various songwriters to contribute a theme song: Bob Dylan was asked and supposedly wrote Lay Lady Lay, and Joni was asked - does anyone know if that's true, and if - which song she pitched? In the end they chose Everybody's talking and had Harry sing it. As you know... Mike P's interpretive signing as Lucy sang "Tam Lin."<< Firstly, let me make it clear that Catherine did not make a spelling mistake: I was signing (as in miming, not as in autographs). Never let it be said (in Fairy Glen?) that I inflicted my singing on anyone. I would agree with Cats verdict on William and Less version of Yvette and there were many other wonderful moments. The wonderfullest for me (and for Bobby, Im sure) was Martins masterful rendition of Berkley Harts Barrel of Rain. Simply excellent, as was his accompanying for others too. mike in bcn NP Gillian Welch Thats the way the whole thing ends ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Sep 2011 11:51:36 +0100 From: Anita G Subject: Holycombe Photos NJC It really has been super to see so many beautiful photographs of Holycombe and the surrounding area. Thanks to everyone for giving the links to the photos to those dinosaurs (like me) who have yet to make the Facebook leap. I went many years ago to the Rollright Stones to see Mark Rylance as Prospero in 'The Tempest' and no word of a lie, we had a huge storm at the end. It was a magical night full of great power and I think that area has a lot of ancient feel in the land. Places like Whichford, Hook Norton and the surrounding area has lots of good memories for me - - and the magic in the place is underlined by so many great photographs. Only one thing was a bit odd. I looked at Garret's pictures and saw Steph standing with my my Aunty Phylis in the photos and thought, blimey, what's she doing at a Joni Fest? Only then did I look again and realise 'twas me! Oh this ageing thing........how strange it is Anita x ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Sep 2011 10:15:23 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: RE: Questions questions Joni's song, "Midnight Cowboy" was recorded by Donal Leace on his eponymous 1972 Atlantic lp, which was produced by Roberta Flack: http://jonimitchell.com/music/song.cfm?id=291 > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of B > Lux > Sent: Monday, September 05, 2011 6:16 AM > To: Joni List > Subject: Questions questions > > Hello all, > > here is a funny Joniesque coincidence. I wish I knew the answer to this as well. From interviews with Joni that I have seen/read on the web, I get the impression she is in full retirement from the public eye. This is what I have gleaned from my reading: She mostly paints, does not sing in public, does not write music any longer, does not have a recording contract and does not even play piano or guitar any more! Joni divides her time between LA and Canada. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, but apparently has a strained relationship with her daughter Kilauren Gibb. I read that Joni does not own a cell phone or computer, and she does not run her own website (it was started and maintained by fans). I have not seen anything recently about how Joni is doing in her battle with Morgellon's syndrome or whether she has attempted to stop smoking again. I worry about her health and would love to find out how she is doing. However, I did recently post this link showing new photos of Joni with her dad this summer on his 100th birthday. I think she looks great in the photos. I have reposted the link below in case you missed it before. If anyone else has any news about Joni please share!! Wish there was a way fans could contact Joni to encourage her not to give up on sharing her beautiful music with us. Thanks for this clear and comprehensive status report, Sharon! Just one little comment: I thought there was still some sort of recording deal or contract for 3 "albums", of which Travelogue was the first (somehow I don't think Shine was part of it) and that she had said one of them was going to be an album of Christmas songs... But I guess if Joni does not want to do it, she will know how to get out of that contract, or buy herself out of it. Anybody has any update on that? It seems more like a carry over from Dog Eat Dog, like, they didn'yt have enough room for it on that album, so they put it on the next album. The whole sound of it seems much more in keeping with DED. Anyone else ever noticed this ? And on a completely different subject, I had the good chance to catch both Martha Wainwright and Marianne Faithfull on the same evening, back to back, during an outdoor concert in Quebec this summer. What a study in contrasts ! Martha captivated the crowd on solo acoustic guitar for over an hour, bounding with energy all over the stage, while Marianne, the old pro, seemed so uncomfortable and ill at ease with herself as a performer. Plus, she likes to smoke on stage, too :) Sadly, her best days seem to be behind her.
