Very dreamy landscapes. Thanks for sharing! Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Sep 2011 01:25:39 -0700 From: "kbhla" Subject: Jonifests and thanks and miscellaneous I love seeing the photos of the Holycombe Jonifest (here and on Facebook) and so many old familiar faces. The scenery is as beautiful as I remember from the last event and everyone looks so fantastic! After the LA Joni gathering I had to rush to get ready to take off to Washington state for a week. I'm really sorry I didn't have the chance to get together with my Joni friends there but was spending time with two close childhood friends who have had serious health challenges the past year and to celebrate their roads to recovery. One friend introduced me to Joni, initially via Judy, when we were around 12 years old. I got her to take out and play her guitar for the first time in years. She still has a voice and I croaked along with her to STAS and Marcie ;-) I travel to Seatlle at least once a year and finally got to the EMP (Experience Music Project). It is so impressive and well done. Among many other features, it has a great "history of the guitar" exhibit and also the premier Jimi Hendrix exhibit. Jimi being a native of Seatlle and all, his family has donated many extremely rare gems to the installation. So many things struck me about his history - a lot of which I never knew. What struck me the most were the exhibits of his handwritten lyrics. His handwriting is so artistic, delicate and elegant - not what I would have imagined because when I think of Jimi, I mainly think of his stunning guitar - - but his lyrics are really sensitive and poetic. What a huge loss that he left us at such a young age. Now that I'm not in a rush to get to the next events, I wanted to say more about the LA fest and thank those who made my birthday during that week so extra special. Thanks to Lieve and Jim for the slow cooker and cookbook (also used to cook up the Louisiana Boudin during the week ;-); to Paz for a bottle of my favortite Barbadian Rhum (which I'm enjoying as we speak); to Phyliss for gifting me with Robin Adler's re-released CD "It's About Time" which is seriously one of the finest and most beautiful recordings I have ever heard - it's a must have!; to Jody for the gourmet candies, including a bag of incredible chocolate "martini olives" ;-); to Dave B. for the DVD of their U.K./Denmark tour last year; to Rick and Brad for the amazing, gorgeous and beautifully framed print of Joni from the book "Fearless Women" (the photographer is their neighbor!) and to all of you who were here in L.A. and have shared so many great photos of the week. Also have to agree with others who were so blown away by the piano performances by our own Chirs "CC Karma" - truly one of the greatest surprises of the week. Every single day he would say he probably couldn't meet up for a particular event and every night he DID show up afterall. We were thrilled to hear him! hope to see you all again very soon. Joni said she'd let me post just one, which I've put on the blog. http://www.williamwaddell.blogspot.com/ WtSx ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2011 14:21:07 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Stuck On Repeat mine njc From: >I like to whistle "Welcome To The Machine". She says that he is really a very sensitive soul. I guess this doesn't surprise me, although maybe it would have if I had heard it many years ago. For some strange reason too, and I don't know where this came from, but for a long time I thought Jimi Hendrix was English. When I found out he was, in fact, from Seattle, it surprised me. Best wishes to your friends for continued recovery. I think many of us have arrived at a very challenging time of life. >________________________________ >From: kbhla >To: joni@smoe.org >Sent: Thursday, September 1, 2011 4:25:39 AM >Subject: Jonifests and thanks and miscellaneous > >I love seeing the photos of the Holycombe Jonifest (here and on Facebook) >and so many old familiar faces. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTDEsT8kkMI for anyone who didn't catch this another time. I find the video kind of hard to take - it has all these swirly blue things surrounding the pictures of Joan and Jim that make my astigmatic eyes hurt. She says Jimi was tired of playing the guitar with his teeth and the phallic stuff and that he was really very shy and that he wanted to change and that people do need to change. >________________________________ >From: Catherine McKay >To: kbhla ; "joni@smoe.org" >Sent: Thursday, September 1, 2011 8:11:07 AM >Subject: Re: Jonifests and thanks and miscellaneous > >Where did I see a video posted (Youtube probably, but someone either on this >list or else on Facebook posted a link to it, and it was recent), where Joni >is interviewed and talks about having met Jimi Hendrix and how he wanted to >get away from that persona who burned guitars and so on. Will, this is brilliant. I love this photo and also enjoyed your artistic touch with so many of the photos. It was simply great to meet you at Holycombe and I so loved your interesting arrangements of Joni - especially This Flight Tonight and Night In The City. Fabulous! I hope we can hang out one day and sing together - maybe in the whisker wheat! From Max Bennett: Hi Dave, Received your CD today. This Cd is superb!!!!!!!!!! Everything on it is in great taste! The players, the vocals, the charts ! Great harmonic concepts & structures!! Each song is done beautifully. You all should be very proud of this. She should hear this. Kudos to all!!!!!!!!! m From me: Max gave me an hour long interview on Monday and I have transcribed it. I should have it uploaded for all to read very soon - I am letting him check it first in case he wants to reword or edit anything. A fascinating and wonderfully down to earth man with a (so far) 63-year recording career. I'd urge everyone to check out MaxBennett.com and read his bio and discography before our interview goes up. You'll be amazed at who he has played with. Dave ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Sep 2011 16:07:12 +0100 From: Anita G Subject: Re: Well, this made OUR day! Oh My God!
