I wouldn't presume to know one way or another what people listen to, music is so easy to come by and to share. If I had to guess, I would doubt that today's miners and farmers are listening to Welch whose music has a more nostalgic feel. It seems that nostalgia is usually an indulgence of people who are distant from a certain experience (by time, location, or class). Finally, you wrote: "It's as if she sought to become that woman in the famous depression era black and white photo, of the haggard but somehow handsome dust bowl mother. Like that spoke to her so much that it entered her soul..." This, of course, returns us to Joni and the spirit she says entered *her*body and created her little-discussed alter ego, Art Nouveau. "A chance encounter led to the cover of "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter." "I was walking down Hollywood Boulevard, in search of a costume for a Halloween party when I saw this black guy with a beautiful spirit walking with a bop" which she demonstrates with elan. "As he went by me he turned around and said, "Ummmm, mmm.looking good sister, lookin' good!" Well I just felt so good after he said that. It was as if this spirit went into me. So I started walking like him. I bought a black wig, I bought sideburns, a moustache. I bought some pancake makeup. It was like 'I'm goin' as him!'" It was a great Halloween costume. So good, in fact, that she found she could do this character and even people who had known her for a long time couldn't tell it was a woman underneath. "Even the makeup went on like it grew on me; the patina of it didn't look chalky, it looked like it was there," she says. Joni enjoyed the transformation so much that she used the character during the shooting session for "Don Juan..." -- This, from her interview with Angela LaGreca for *Rock Photo *in 1985. You have to go out of your way and purposely seek out and listen to community or public or college radio around these parts to hear her. Those sort of workers would most likely be listening to the commercial country stations (blah.....) or if they're from south of the border, some spanish language station. Gillian W. and Dave Rawlings are pretty specialized here in the states, I'd say. She could either "clean up" and go Nashville (like Allison Krause did) OR remain semi underground doing her weird little thing she does. It's as if she sought to become that woman in the famous depression era black and white photo, of the haggard but somehow handsome dust bowl mother. Like that spoke to her so much that it entered her soul, like the soul of the dying Indian in the desert entered Jim Morrison and kind of shamanized him. barely awake, em ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Aug 2011 08:48:37 -0700 From: LC Stanley Subject: Re: LA joni tribute Hi Anita, If Joni was there we didn't see her. It seems to me that this authenticity thread has encompassed all kinds of slants and takes on what it is for something or someone to be 'authentic'. We have walked through the geographical, the literary, post modernism, all kinds of music and genres, cultural identities, personal disclosures and experiences, people's fears of the density and depth of the discussion (if I contribute, will I be smart enough? has been a recurrent theme), cross dressing and loads of other stuff I've probably filtered out - but so much human life seems to have been here in this discussion. I have realised that I have come at the term 'authenticity' from a psychological perspective, so when Sharon wrote about the Johari window and finished with: "This reminded me of the Johari window and how it illustrates some of the ways our perceptions of our reality can be skewed. So I guess the bottom line is that we cannot always be authentic for ourselves much less anyone else." It takes me into thinking much more (again) about the nature of contact (how we connect with our ever changing, multi faceted selves and is there an organismic, authentic self) and how we contact others (with their constantly changing, multi faceted selves), not just in music or literature, but in all things, including JMDL. And again it brings me round to the existential that I think underpins or joins it all. Or does it? Anyone got any views about that? Anita ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Aug 2011 18:54:13 +0100 (BST) From: Lieve Reckers Subject: Re: LA joni tribute - Once in a while, there comes a night like this... I can second everything Laura wrote. It was a dream night, so perfect ("once in a while, the comes a night like this...") that I had to pinch myself. I'd never been to the Hollywood Bowl and expected a sports arena, but this was something else: a huge version of a Greek open air amphitheatre, surrounded by hills and huge trees, a starry sky and balmy air, where only the distant sound of traffic gives any indication that you're not somewhere in the Mediterranean... The atmosphere was electric, like one big party or special festival, and the JMDLers were all together in one perfectly central area. The music was amazing, as Laura said. Dave Blackburn also gave me an anthusiastic impromptu review during the break, about the musicians producing splashes of colour instead of providing "picket fence" backing, and I urged him to write this into a JMDL post which he has "kind of" promised to do! All musicians were amazing, although we all felt that Aimee Mann was rather flat and nervous most of the time, although she did a pretty decent last number (can't remember which one now), and I think everybody agreed that in the last few days we had heard Robin (with Dave or the full Mutts) do much better, heartfelt versions of those songs. Glen Hansard (an Irish singer) and Kurt Elling ("son of Frank Sinatra") were previously unknown to me, and true revelations, especially Glen who sounded so perfect in the 3 numbers he did (Coyote, Edith and Shadows & Light) that it gave me goosebumps. There was indeed no surprise appearance of Joni or anybody else, but it really did not matter, she was so "there" in everything we heard. This JMDL get-together (if I can still call it that, in spite of it being partly run from Facebook - ugh, wash my mouth!) is turning into one of the best Jonifests ever, and that is thanks to the spontaneous collaboration of many people, which makes it extra special for me. I will write another post about that soon, but must get some late breakfast first before they take it off the menu for lunch. All the best to everyone, Lieve in LA PS Talk about Robin easily outdoing Aimee Mann: if anybody hasn't heard Robin's own CD, It's About Time, yet (with various cover numbers from Sting to Gershwin) which has just been re-released, it is really superb. Wow Cassy, what a lovely message! I'm so happy to hear your story, and can only confirm that the good vibes that hung over our Hollywood Bowl last night, must have reached you all the way in Seattle! And heaven knows you deserved it! I was going to put this in my next post about the whole "Jonifest" aspect of our gathering here in LA, but let me say it now: those stylish badges that you made for us, which we received in those equally stylish presentation bags, were absolutely adored by everyone! I heard several people, who were not there when the badges were first handed out, ask if they could also have one, and of course Kakki made sure that they did, because there was a big supply! So you were "there" even more with us in spirit, as we were proudly wearing our badge at the concert, and somehow that spirit must have found its way all over into your restaurant in Seattle. I'm sure I speak for all your friends here to say we would have planned it this way for you if we could have!
