It's a great quirky jazz album featuring a variety of tunes, including originals, some standards and some contemporary covers jazzified (Paul Simon, Sting etc) and features the top jazz musicians from the San Diego area, in particular uber-guitarist Peter Sprague. We recorded it in 1998 but it has been out of print for several years. Now it is available again remixed and remastered by yours truly, and with new artwork. If you'd like to give a listen to all ten tracks (or even purchase a copy, hint, hint) please click here:http://www.robinadler.com/. It's so new that it's not available as a download yet but will appear in iTunes in the coming weeks. best wishes always, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2011 07:14:32 -0700 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: resending with spaces around the link... Most other bands you like are on it too. I just discovered June Tabor and most of her albums are also on that site. She is the female equivalent of Richard Thompson, and i dare say she reminds me of Joni too. Obviously she's been around for years and perhaps she's been discussed here before but she's new to me This past monday i attended Daniel Lanois' Black Dub with the "beautiful" Brian Blade. He was amazing because he was able to insert his jazz drumming in the middle of straight rock/blues format. I mean he would alternate and mix both together as opposed to what i've always heard when jazz drummers join rock bands, that is they play jazz or rock but never the 2 together in the same song, at least not in the subtle way that Brian does it. I was in front of the stage and my jaw dropped. I've seen many great drummers but i don't think i've ever heard one who could blend in that way. Brian received a fantastic ovation from the audience. Incidentally i think Brian should keep on playing other people's music as i was very disappointed with his solo effort. I will upload a dvd of that concert on dime. You can only download torrent files there. There may be legal torrents there of public domain works or stuff with a creative commons license but 99% of the torrents share illegal copies. As for the new Bon Iver album, the New York Times has a streaming version online here: http://6thfloor.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/09/listen-to-the-new-bon-iver-record/ moni k. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2011 14:10:56 -0400 From: Gerald Notaro Subject: Re: Downloads, June Tabor & Brian Blade - njc Glad you found June Tabor. The end result is whatever format you choose to download: flac, mp3, DivX, etc As far as the legality you are right, i think it's up to each individual to decide what to do or not. I happily disagree. :))) There is a difference between hosting a file which is a tool for sharing and hosting the actual files. Would pirateBay host illegal albums and movies, it would have been shut down long time ago. And using a torrent file/program for sharing goes beyond downloading because you are sharing the files yourself as uploads (so others can download them), that way you are part of the distribution of those files. That makes totally sense for files made available via www.dimeadozen.org, as those are bootlegs shared among fans. To me, this is different from sharing official albums the artists want to sell. And you could also just actually download files from a filehoster which would not make it more legal but at least you would not contribute to sharing the files. Speaking of bootlegs, the Fleet Foxes live in Paris 2011 are right here: http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=816 moni k. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2011 21:52:57 +0200 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: RE: Downloads, June Tabor & Brian Blade, njc OK Moni technically you are correct. I download & upload primarily from dimeadozen so no argument there As far as official stuff on piratebay this is a much broader debate and i really don't want to engage in it tonight Laurent ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2011 22:26:42 +0200 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: RE: Downloads, June Tabor & Brian Blade, njc Well you corner me don't you Chris I was going to plead some things i do to create publicity for less known artists, which entail quite a bit of effort on my part and i do it just because i feel like helping those artists. But from the tone of your post i can tell that no argument i could ever invoke would ever stand to justify my crime, so yes please shoot me so i can burn in hell faster. Laurent ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2011 23:49:10 +0200 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: RE: Downloads, June Tabor & Brian Blade, njc OK you're right, i didn't think. Mine is a crime that has become so widely spread that nowadays the only source of income for many artists is touring. Sad but real. Hopefully some honest chaps such as you and Moni will only buy and nothing else. And yes sometimes i buy the cds, preferably at the gigs so i know the money goes right into the artist's pocket, or on their website. And some other times, due to my large appetite for music, i do what millions of other people do, which of course does not make it right, but let the one who never sinned throw the 1st stone at me. Naturally when the artist comes to town i'll bring in as many friends as i can round up. Anyway the vast majority of my downloads are bootlegs so no harm done. And actually this is a way to promote new artists too and they know it. Laurent ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2011 16:25:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Downloads, June Tabor & Brian Blade NJC Thanks Laurent - I'm aware of PirateBay, not sure if I can get it here (doubt it) but my preference is to buy the music, either by legal download or in an independent shop. Better for the artist, better for the indie music store, better for the business. It's an interesting topic - when I was a teenager I'd borrow my friends' records and put them on cassette, and they'd borrow mine and do the same. Kind of the illegal downloading of the time. But I was also buying lots of music at the time. I'm not so sure that today's teenagers are doing their share of buying - they have been trained to think that music is free and that hurts lots of folks who are trying to make a living at it. Even now I'll burn copies of CD's that I think friends will like and give them to them in hopes of turning them on to the artist. My buddy Don has given me quite a few and turned me on to lots of artists whose CD's I'm now buying. Meanwhile, Moni told me about Grooveshark.com which comes through loud and clear here in Noodletown. Spun the Bon Iver yesterday and listening to the new Jason Isbell now. Thanks Moni! (And yes Michael Paz I know that you and Jason are good pals, haha) Bob NP: Jason Isbell, "Tour Of Duty" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jul 2011 01:48:04 +0200 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: Downloads NJC Hi Bob Glad to hear we do the same thing as far as turning on people in the hope they'll support the artist. Unlike the teenagers you are referring to, I think we both buy music but we can't buy it all because there is just too much. So it comes down to a choice of who we are going to support and who we're not. Or simply i'll buy what i can't download so i don't have to make the choice, unless it's some indie who i think needs the money. Now since we opened this topic i have a question: If someone listens to the album in streaming, that is legal. But in the end if he does not buy the album because his curiosity is now satisfied the result for the artist is the same, that is: no income. So what's the difference between streaming and downloading from that perspective?
