No offence meant, I 'm sure and none taken. I'm loving this discussion. I somehow think that Joni was always aware of how much of a *business* the music business is and that she as an artist was never really part of it. She saw it in the 50s/60s when in America they'd get 'pretty Italian boys' and make them sing hits, only to make money for the record company. I think Joni has been self-referential a couple of times but mainly in one album. Blue Motel Room being one (but blue, being a colour is quite specific to her work, Blue, Blue Boy) and in Amelia, where she slept in a 'Cactus Tree Motel' and spend her life in clouds at ice altitudes. (tangential discussion) I always thought that The Boho Dance (if it was going to be about anyone at all, not that I'm saying Joni wrote the Boho Dance about anyone in specifics) was Bob Dylon. It's the word 'subterranean' that sticks out. I don't know why. I'm sure other writers have used it but he brought it into popular culture. Anyway, my tuppence. Had been there for happy hour (a lot) but had never eaten there. The food was OK, the service typical (abysmal). Anyway, while dining I heard not 1 but TWO Joni tunes; For Free and WOHAM (F-bomb included). Very cool. I had to enjoy in silence as the three blokes I was with (2 Brits, 1 Fin) would not have understood. But y'all will. When we finished our gig in Winnipeg I went to the hotel bar with Ronnie and Rob McCoury and a couple of the cats from our band and was hanging out when they played "Be Cool" on the music system. Two min after that Lucinda Williams and entourage came in and was hanging out with us and talking about New Orleans and Susan Cowsill and stuff. A couple nights later after we finished playing the Halifax Jazz Fest I was in my room having a drink and playing my guitar waiting for the merch people to bring my product back and settle with me. The guy that brought my stuff came in and squealed "ooo a Parker guitar, I have always wanted to play one". I let him play it and showed him the VG-99 and told him about my tunings etc. He said "oh cool like Joni Mitchell and stuff" So as it turned out he is a big Joni fan and even likes the later stuff like Shine and TTT. There is hope for the world in mine eyes as this kid is in his 20's. Ah Joan! He then played You Turn Me On for me using my tuning. Pretty cool!
